Find it hilarious how the Barca fans are blaming the likes of Griezemann, Coutinho, Umtiti etc for Messi leaving instead of turning their anger towards the people at the club and Messi himself
It's not too indifferent to those in our own midsts who lambast the likes of Delph, to an extent rightly so, but won't accept the club's own shortcomings.

Footballers have a value to the club or else they aren't signed.
Messi even when he drops to half wages isn't affordable to Barca in the current climate.
Clubs elsewhere will make him offers, he'll choose one and that will become his new value.

I've given up trying to work out how some footballers think. Messi should take a pay cut and finish his career at Barcelona.

He just doesn't need any more money from them.
The deal was done for a contract at half his current wages, the Barca have found that even that is unaffordable.
They have been trying to sell players to bring in the cash, but their asking prices have been at a level that other Clubs are willing to pay, as like us their wages are very high as well.

It was 50% of his current wages but over a five year contract, which was purely an accountants decision.

There's no way he is or was going to stay playing for Barca until he's thirty-nine to merit his astronomical wages, so it was the same money spread out.

so probably a 3 year contract with the money spread over the 5 years then

As people have said hes got that much money itll never be spent in his life time his kids lifetimes or his kids kids lifetimes so why not just enjoy the end of your career at who ever you want to play for on like 80k a week or what ever

surely that would make most sense

Different sport of course but Messi could have benefitted from learning a bit from Tom Brady.
Brady regularly took a lower salary (still big money, of course) which allowed the Patriots to have a stronger team.
Peyton Manning, on the other hand, had max contracts which led to some more financial constraints for his teams.
