You do see and hear of clubs offering financial incentives to parents, even with children of a tender age. If the clubs see them as money, so will the parents. My club is one of the most successful in Ireland and by course we always have senior county players. They are always good at telling younger academy players that if it doesn’t work out, you have a club to go back and represent. If you keep performing then County will come back for you. It’s a great motivational message as it’s true.
Different sport though. The money in football changes it all. Gaelic’s elite heroes still have day jobs whereas football elite is stupid wealth. No surprise that many parents see the cash cow and forget that it’s just a kid finding his way.
There is a boy who my son plays with, who already look a prodigious talent. I know players develop at different rates, but I could see him as a PL player.
The club do the same, as there's talk of payments going to his parents even with children still in the infants! For older children, we're talking about houses!
As I said, I simply want my son to have fun, and talking realistically I know he's not the best of talents there. If he ends up playing Sunday league and is happy...
... we'll be happy.
