That was very nice of Mrs. J. She certainly seems fond of your mum and she has reason for it because she knows your mom raised a good man! Thanks Sassy.
My dad passed away in 2000 and my wife suggested that mum come and live with us.
We are lucky enough ( well actually we both worked really hard ) to have a big house with lots of land so it seemed a natural thing to convert an outbuilding to make a home for my mum.
At first she was reluctant to leave her home and friends that she had known for so long but eventually she decided that she wanted to move up and she said it's the best thing she's ever done.
She has her independence but at 50 metres away we are close enough to deal with any problems.
Holidays can be difficult because as well as getting someone to house sit and look after our animals ( 2 dogs , a cat , 2 pygmy goats , 2 sheep and 12 chickens) we also have to make sure that they get on OK with mum and increasingly she can be a bit cranky.
Pandemic allowing we are going to the Caribbean in the winter and my cousin who she loves will come to stay to look after her.
Mrs J is wonderful with her , making her soups currys and roast dinners although mum still cooks herself.
It can be hard work and sometimes she appears ungrateful but I think that's just old people, I dunno.
Strangely she loves to hear about when I play table tennis and adores game shows , the older the better. She definitely still all there.
If you are thinking of moving your mum in the one thing I'd recommend is trying to make sure that she had a self contained space so you and Mr SC have your own privacy and life.
It seems you are all enjoying the fruits of your hard work! Sound like you have a lovely place for yourselves. In what area do you live? Having a big house (specifically an earthship) with land, farm animals to raise along with my own vegetable garden is exactly what I'm thriving for once I get to retired. My husband and I have also worked very hard for what we got and for what we have accomplished but we still have a few more goals that we need to reach, and having a bigger house to accommodate my mum is one of them. But well definitely need to find a place that she, and we can have some form of independence. I love my mama dearly but living with her it is going to be a challenge and will required a lot of patience. Colombian moms tend to be very possessive of their children so my mom can be quite intense at times. But my mom is also one of my best friends, she has a great sense of humor, is a creative and artistic soul, and she loves me so profoundly that I could have not asked for a better mom.
How fun going to the Caribbean, I haven't been to that area myself but I hope one day I have the opportunity. I love traveling and getting to visit new countries, and learning about new cultures, eating new foods, appreciating the natural beauty of this place we get to call planet. So I hope you and Mrs. J get to go. But I understand the challenge it would be to leave your mum and your animal under the care of other people. And at her age tbh, it is expected for your mum to be cranky old lady, it is not that she is ungrateful. I'm sure she appreciates everything you all do for her and in her heart she knows that she is lucky to have you and Mrs. J taking care of her.
