Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Care homes should be part of the NHS……
Probably the only "political" thing we might agree upon Pete.

Well perhaps here's another. No political party has ever got to grips with a coordinated approach to social care within the health department.

In fact I'd go further and say that all parties pay lip service to social care and have no cogent policy to solve the crisis.

The NHS is inherently dysfunctional and inefficient by design, so there's no hope that they'd be able to get the overall care system to be effective.

I'm a big advocate of the NHS, or the idea of it at least, but by God it needs reforming from the top to the bottom.

A number of years ago one of our ex pub employees applied for a role running the kitchen in a care home and I was asked for a reference. Rather than just pen the usual letter I decided to visit the establishment and speak directly to the manager as I intended to give a glowing recommendation, which I did. However, I was struck by how miserable and chaotic the place was. Our ex employee got the job but left the role to move to a different care home after six months or so telling me the difference between where she had been and where she moved to was chalk and cheese. The difference in standards and care being massive…..

Somewhat different in NI as we don’t control our own budget but an interesting political play is in full swing. Our local hospital, Daisy Hill, is currently being run down with eventual closure feared.

Amidst street protests, the SDLP have publicly called for their political rivals SF to take the health ministry at Stormont and save Daisy Hill. First time I have ever seen a party directly challenge another to take a portfolio.

*edit for context, NI runs a d’Hondt system for election of ministers rather than the largest party having them all.

Regular readers may recall I said that our elderly neighbour has recently had to go into care. We visited a few weeks ago and it is grim. The dayroom has chairs all round the walls and the residents just sit round looking at each other, it really is like God’s waiting room. The bedrooms are along windowless corridors and the smell…. The staff are lovely, how they manage to maintain their cheerfulness in such surroundings I can’t imagine. Poor Blanche (neighbour) said she was hoping her daughter would soon say she could go home. Broke my heart and I’m ashamed to say I haven’t yet got the courage up to visit again.

That’s tough.….
