Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

I agree. I couldn't be a carer for all the tea in China. I haven't got the patience. Mr F however has so much empathy with old folk. Before his late Dad went into a care home because of increasingly unmanageable dementia, he would bath him, wash his hair etc because although he had carers, he refused to let the females do any of that.
You have to be a very special person to do that job. Unfortunately I also get to read some real horror stories about carers- robbing old folk, physical abuse, leaving residents in soiled wet beds for hours. Awful stuff.
You get bad eggs in every walk of life Anj. And sadly they find their way into jobs where they can take most advantage.

I don't think the Private Healthcare industry is regulated enough as regards recruitment, qualifications and training, but it has such a huge staffing problem as it is I don't know what the answer is. Money is part of the solution but the whole system needs revamping too.

100% agree again. They need to have a carers register similar to doctors lawyers nurses etc that is regulated. Pay people decent wages too. One of my friends has recently lost his Mum. Her care home fees were £3k a month. Loads of the people who come across my desk have just made a bad choice on one day because they are horrendously overworked due yo minimum staffing levels. Incoming rant. It's just profiteering. The carers are on minimum wage but the homes are raking in money. During COVID private care homes were moaning that the Govt didn't give them enough PPE. Why didn't they buy it themselves? They make enough money? Because rich people do not like spending their own money. They want other people to fund them (looking at you Richard Branson!).
My Grandad had dementia. He spent the last few years of his life in a long term geriatric ward in Rainhill Hospital. He was well looked after and well cared for. None of those places exist anymore- hived off to save money and straight into the clutches of private capitalist greed.
Phew. Feel better for that. Apologies to all- if only we had a current affairs thread.🤣🤣 I'll go back to 70s music and impure thoughts about DCL.

Absolutely battering it down here today so not been able to get up to the village shop for some supplies. Picked up milk and bread on the way in yesterday and luckily enough have sufficient stores in the freezer to keep me going for a few days, including some of my posh sausages. Decided to have at least a couple of days off the booze and dry out a bit.

Talking of drying out, got totally drenched yesterday in Dublin (there's a surprise) walking the 20 yards from Airport to plane then had to sit in my soaked clothes in an air conditioned plane for about and hour and a half. Not surprised I seem to be coming down with something this morning. Sore throat and sniffy nose.

Done my ITV 7 and discovered 2 of my favourite horses, Azure Blue and Big Bad Bear, are running against each other in the same race. Decisions decisions. lol

Hope you all have a great weekend.

I worked at Rainhill Hospital from 1983 until it closed in 1991.
It was a wonderful place and a true asylum (dictionary definition - "shelter or protection from danger") The closure of these big asylums and the move towards so called 'care in the community' was a bad move IMO.
Without doubt there were faults in the system, but closing all the asylums down was a clear case of throwing the baby out with the bath water.

My Grandad died there in 1988. I visited him there often. The old men, all of whom had varying stages of dementia were so well looked after by the staff. It truly was an oasis of calm.

Oh my goodness, we have monsoon like rain here. I've promised Mr F I'll go and pick him up from the bookies when I've finished overtime (in about 7 minutes). I do need to get dressed first. Overtime dress code - get out of bed, log onto laptop. I may have to rethink sandals!
Same here. Rain is coming down in stairods. So bad that I've lost the satellite signal.

I have this mental image of your annual appraisal interview Anj. "So tell me Anj. Which aspects of working from home do you find most beneficial to your role?". "Well, I like the fact I can slob around around in my PJs and slippers all day". "Oh. OK. Not quite the answer I was looking for" lol

I do have some standards. I get dressed during the week. However bras and shoes are now filed under ' going out clothes' and I can't even remember what the purpose of tights were!🤣

Spot on. Even the good care homes run by non-profit charities are paying close to minImum wage . I think we all know this is potentially coming to us one day and hoping to avoid it .

You left out the ability to
a. Pick up MrF from the bookies as and when required and
b. The need to log onto GOT every 30 minutes.

Care homes should be part of the NHS……
