Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Afternoon all from a beautiful 24 degrees of Greek sunshine. I was going to tell you where I was but we’ve just been in a shop and chatting to the guy as you do and we said how much we loved coming, and he said please don’t tell your friends we don’t want more tourists which I get but it’s a double edged sword. It’s certainly quieter this year. Anyway we’re in Sifnos - I won’t be dictated to 😂 try it it’s lush and here’s a view from last night’s bar.

Looks and sounds fantastic. I'm not jealous, not even a little bit lol

Been a difficult weekend. Mum getting increasingly forgetful and confused and yesterday she fell getting out of the bath and very badly scraped her leg taking off a lot of skin on her shin and lower leg.

We've told her loads of times not to use the bath and to take a shower instead but she refuses to listen.

So , I've taken the plug to her bath so she can't take one unless Mrs J is there to help her.

Anyway I bathed the wound , applied antiseptic cream and a bandage but it's still bleeding so I've called the district nurse to come and have a look and apply a new dressing....." We will try to get to you this week" FFS! She says she's not in pain so I guess it's not an emergency.

I just wish she would listen.

Sorry about your Mum. I'd ring 111 if it keeps bleeding. Old people have very fragile skin. I'm forever reading about skin tears when we get care home referrals. I'm sure you know all that though.

Thanks Anj. I don't want to poke around with her wound too much and the blood showing on the outside of her bandage looks dry and doesn't look fresh.

I was going to check it again tomorrow if the district nurse doesn't come.

Perhaps I should consult her GP, I will.

@anjelikaferrett it gets worse! Phoned GP. "Sorry we have no control over the District Nurse". Me " Ok , can I bring her down to see your in house nurse ?" Gp "Sorry we don't do dressings!"

So tried my local pharmacist who is a great fella. He explained that the District Nurses aren't even employed by the NHS and part of a private enterprise and there's no way to send them.a rocket.

However , good as gold he said bring mum down tomorrow ( it's only 1/4 mile away ) and he'll have a look and sort out a new dressing if it needs it.

Honestly this country is going to the dogs.

Oh my goodness. That's scandalous. Outsourcing is an absolute curse. Once you get profits and shareholders involved it all goes belly up. Public services are supposed to serve the public, not for profit. Look at HMRC during COVID - they delivered the furlough scheme from scratch and the vaccine programme worked because the NHS delivered it. Admittedly it isn't perfect but things work better in house.
Your poor Mum. I do hope she gets sorted.

How awful for you and your poor Mum. I hope you get it sorted and soon. We had similar experience with my Mum when she somehow managed to cut her leg pottering about in her garden. She managed to get into the house and call my brother ( she lived with him) who not being great with the sight of blood called me round. The kitchen looked as though there had been a murder. Called 111 who sent paramedics. They cleaned the wound and dressed it but wouldn’t take her to hospital as the bleeding had stopped, even though we pleaded that maybe she should be looked at, she had lost a lot of blood and was nearly ninety years old. No it always looks worse than it is, families always worry… This meant Mum, frightened of re- opening the wound sat practically stock still for the rest of the day, apart from brief trips to the loo. Luckily our surgery did see her the next day and referred her to the nurse practitioner, who sorted it. As an aside the NP prescribed some moisturising cream as the skin of the elderly is very thin and prone to tearing. Best wishes to your Mum, hope she is on the mend ASAP.💙

Not to politicise @jazzy ‘s post but you are so right. And it’s interesting to see how many services that have been given private provider contracts have now been handed back because they can’t make a profit out of it. It’s impossible to make a profit out of complex care but hey the NHS is still crap isn’t it because it can’t balance the books 😡. Excuse the ouzo fuelled rant.
