Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Mum's 94 and lives with us. We have nephews who are teachers with young kids and tests or not I don't want them to mix with mum , particularly as another nephew isn't prepared to get vaccinated ( note to self ...if they come over on Boxing Day don't tell him he's a [Poor language removed] for not getting vaccinated ....he's a kopite so there's plenty to fall out over anyway ) so what do you say or do?
Tell them to koff.
Your mum is (as always with mums) the priority there, not some cocky yoot with the rest of his life in front of him.

Here goes. You need
1 onion
Mushrooms ( optional)
2 cloves garlic.
Two tins mushy peas
One tin baked beans
I tin chopped tomatoes
Curry powder ( to taste)
Chilli powder ( as much or as little as you like)
Chop and fry onion and mushrooms until soft in a little oil. Chop or grate garlic and add. Fry for about another minute then add curry powder and chilli. Make sure everything is coated. Add all the tinned ingredients, give them a good mix and simmer for 20- 30 minutes .

I did at some chicken to mine. If you want to do that fry it at the beginning.

Trust me this is nicer than it sounds!
I've got mushy peas in the cupboard, might have to buy the rest and I'll see, I will let you know if I try it, could be a while though, I am a procrastinator of the highest order lol

My uncle carried on working until he was in his 80s. Social thing for him, bit of purpose too. Retirement sounds ace (I really love doing nothing), bit I'd need something to occupy me, so I can see why.

Ask me again in 20 odd years time and I'll probably say I'm staying in bed all day everyday.
Ah but retirement, at least for me , isn't about doing nothing DGLC.

It is about have plenty of time to do what you want , what you enjoy.

Personally I still like structure to the day / week so most days I will go to the gym first thing and then go from there.

Apart from the winter I will do plenty of gardening.

In winter I read a lot.

Throughout the year I volunteer at our Animal.Rescue and help out when I can.

I still like to play competitive sport.

The one thing that I avoid in retirement ( apart from Christmas!) is just vegging out on the sofa.

I'm sure that you won't regret a decision to retire.

If you have an active mind there are so many things to do ,just stay away from youtube ,I cannot have a day in peace .
In the last month I have made a patchwork quilt ,a knife from an old shirt and an old saw blade ,two stuffed frogs made from the remains of cloth started making some growing boxes for next years tomatoes ,zucchinis and peas . I have repaired an old router as the new one doesn't like my TV. That is off the top of my head as I have had more projects .
I'm utterly hopeless at DIY and I don't get too much from it. Probably do a bit of voluntary work somewhere. Assuming I don't need the money!

He says he's retired for 4 days a week and that is enough for anyone lol

From a man who will almost eat anything you would stretch my limits with that one ,I would eat it though ,growing up we had nothing but the best lesson I got from the hardship was to eat all put in front of me. I also never throw food away .

Indeed, I was only jesting about doing nothing. And doing 'nothing' for me is indeed reading, dog walking, cycling or walking. So not just idle. But I know what you mean, something extra with meaningful engagement is important.

I think you will be surprised by how much less you can live on as you lose so many expenses that you had when working well I did as I still travelled to work but today it is a little different I suppose .

Yeah, provided I've paid off the mortgage I'll be sound I think. The missus, however, wants a bigger house. That's fine, she's younger than me and can pay for it ?;)

He's not wrong, it's really tedious being home all the time, although I appreciate he's in better condition then me haha not hard, my dad couldn't retire properly and had to keep busy.
Mum tells him to pack it in and he says there's not a chance he's sitting at home with her every day while he can still escape. lollollol
The secret of a long and happy marriage

Good morning all on this clear and bright day today .I hope all slept well ( @Terrarian excepted ) and have a safe and healthy Christmas eve , eve .
It is Christmas here tomorrow as Santa needs to get an early start for the rest of the world so the ham is in the oven for the next many hours and the wife's sister and husband come for dinner .they are nice people and one of the main reasons I thought I could make it moving here .

It is strange as so many downsize at retirement age but we moved recently and given we wanted an indoor pool for my wife's rheumatiod arthritis we ended up in the biggest we ever lived in !

Too late for you to change I suppose but I remember the first nail I knocked in and it bent before my father straightened it for it to go in .I don't think anyone has a special DIY gift ,there are some like me that won't give up and from that I will try anything .
If you don't get a sense of achievement then I understand and agree but you will find loads to do ,a friend of mine thought he would try bridge and ended up with another woman and a hobby he played almost everyday ,had no more time to garden and it changed his life .
