Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Aye. Both heading towards 80 and still run rings round the rest of us. Mum has had a few scares over the years, breast cancer being the main one, but you would never have known, she never complained once and her positive outlook at all times was a real help to the rest of us in dealing with it.
Dad still chooses to work 3 days a week supplying the ships stores in the Freeport with their fresh produce, loads of heavy lifting and physical work. He loves it the madman lollol

Absolute legends the pair of them?

My uncle carried on working until he was in his 80s. Social thing for him, bit of purpose too. Retirement sounds ace (I really love doing nothing), bit I'd need something to occupy me, so I can see why.

Ask me again in 20 odd years time and I'll probably say I'm staying in bed all day everyday.

Not a know it all but the secret of dieting is simple -it is just the amount of calories ,been on a health diet on doctors orders for about 4 years now and it is all about what you eat and you can eat anything you want just not all the time .
We have a limit of one cream per weekend but in the week it is salads and soups .Another thing we have found is there is something that slips under the radar and that is spices ,so spice up whatever boring food you are forced to eat ,that 's what we have learned .
Thank you. You're right about calories. I love spices too. I had been calorie counting and going to the gym from Feb to Oct this year and had lost 33lbs. Then my Dad went into hospital in Liverpool so I was spending half my week there and half at home and my PT had a baby and took 8 weeks paternity leave. Good on him to be honest. The whole thing went tits up and I've put loads back on. And now it's Christmas! I've also discovered I'm an emotional eater. Stressed? Bored? My solution is always, what's in the fridge/ cupboards. So I'm writing it all off until New Year.

I think that's a good view point Anj.

Christmas is challenging in so many ways not least of which is eating and drinking , so fo a few days forget about it and enjoy yourself.

I drink far too much at Christmas so I try not to drink throughout January and increase my fitness regime.

That's may go out the window this year if we go to the Caribbean as planned but that must be in jeopardy at the moment and if I'm honest I'd just prefer not to go.

So have a great time and get back on the fitness kick in the new year is my advice!

I'm trying to cut down on meat, I'd say I've cut down a good 80% still trying to navigate my way around the veggie world, I've had some really nice stuff and some terrible stuff, I'm on a tight budget though as not working cos of my health at the minute.

I do lots of walking, she's not too bad now she's as lazy as me, we used to go out for 2-4 hours a morning I can do 1 1/2 hrs if we're lucky now as my body can't handle it. I don't have a yard or garden so I have to walk her which is a blessing in disguise with my mental health the way it is, gets me out and about even if my skin crawls at times.
Bear with me on this. I made mushy pea curry the other night. It sounds vile but it is actually surprisingly good. And if the budget is tight not an expensive thing to make. Happy to share the recipe if you want it.

After being retired for just over 20 years, I pass on the following advice.
Sunday evening, think about what you need to do the following week. During that week, if you can't be bothered doing it, don't do it. Works for me!
At last a man of my own heart . I plan everything in bed first thing then do some of it maybe.

I'll take a look at it certainly, I have to admit I have become really really lazy in the kitchen, I used to enjoy cooking, even though I'm not very good and so I only really eat frozen food as it's cheaper to fill the freezer and I am ok with just sticking stuff in the oven/air fryer lol

I still buy sauces and stuff in case I get the urge but my cupboard is still full lol.

That's fantastic. I love them just from your description .

Morning chaps. I lost 6stone by eating correctly, not denying myself anything just portion size and frequency of meals. I did stop drinking as well which helped though. The easy trick to losing weight or maintain weight is very simple, If you aren't active eat less calories, the trick is eating less than you burn, that way you will lose weight. If you are eating more than you are burning you can't.

Does anyone know how to change a Beagles clock lol. I even stayed up later and took her out later and all I got was a 5 mins only 4.55am instead of 5, Ideally I need to get back to 6. I am probably too blame, when I'm having a particularly bad day I can be in bed by 7pm so she actually has every right to ask to go to the loo lol
I think she notes lots of things to set her clock ,daylight etc. you can always throw her in a dark padded cell but you wouldn't dream of it would you ?

Morning everyone,

As Ken Dodd might have said...just 2 more sleeps before Santa slides down your chimney missus - always wondered how he gets into flats which don't have one - he must have some good housebreaking skills.

Anyway do we look forward to this time of year anymore, especially if you don't have kids?

Must admit in normal times it is lovely to have a big family gathering but even that's in the balance now.

Mum's 94 and lives with us. We have nephews who are teachers with young kids and tests or not I don't want them to mix with mum , particularly as another nephew isn't prepared to get vaccinated ( note to self ...if they come over on Boxing Day don't tell him he's a [Poor language removed] for not getting vaccinated ....he's a kopite so there's plenty to fall out over anyway ) so what do you say or do?

Fred I'm really pleased that you are spending Christmas day with your neighbour friends , I hope that you will be OK.

It is obviously a very poignant time of year and Mrs J will go to visit her mum and dad's grave with her sister today.

As for me I will go to the gym this morning and wrap some pressies .

What is everybody else doing?

I used to look forward to going to the pub for a quick pint on Christmas day but because of so many cancellations they have closed the restaurant and decided not to open the rest of the pub on Christmas day. Tough times in hospitality.

Well I hope everyone finishes their preparations for Christmas today and can enjoy a peaceful and restful festive break.
"As for me I will go to the gym this morning and wrap some pressies ."So that is why you go . We have been so careful as all the family know ,so it is only correct to carry on ,sad if they take it the wrong but you MUSt look out for your dear mother .

No I'm a great dad haha, she sleeps in bed with me so I can't even pretend I don't know she is awake. If I do she makes a few noises to try get my attention, if it is too early like in 3-5am period I try not to get up and she'll take herself into the front room and keep coming in regular to see if I'm awake.

There's only been one time when she was ill and literally sat at the front door crying to go out and she had been holding a runny plop in bless her so i know when she really needs to go out. It is a ball ache though waking up and putting your joggers on straight away to go outside, she does her bits then goes back to sleep til 9 and I am left reading GOT while everyone else is asleep lol

Here goes. You need
1 onion
Mushrooms ( optional)
2 cloves garlic.
Two tins mushy peas
One tin baked beans
I tin chopped tomatoes
Curry powder ( to taste)
Chilli powder ( as much or as little as you like)
Chop and fry onion and mushrooms until soft in a little oil. Chop or grate garlic and add. Fry for about another minute then add curry powder and chilli. Make sure everything is coated. Add all the tinned ingredients, give them a good mix and simmer for 20- 30 minutes .

I did at some chicken to mine. If you want to do that fry it at the beginning.

Trust me this is nicer than it sounds!

If you have an active mind there are so many things to do ,just stay away from youtube ,I cannot have a day in peace .
In the last month I have made a patchwork quilt ,a knife from an old shirt and an old saw blade ,two stuffed frogs made from the remains of cloth started making some growing boxes for next years tomatoes ,zucchinis and peas . I have repaired an old router as the new one doesn't like my TV. That is off the top of my head as I have had more projects .
