Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Nice to wake to the good news of Chris and Kay doing well on their treatment journeys. With @anjelikaferrett and @blue1948 doing Christmas today we will be blessed with plenty of festive spirit.

I am up early to cook the turkey and gammon this morning with a table pre booked for a pub lunch later. I am happy to report that RTE have kept up their end of the deal and are showing the ‘Department Store’ Christmas episode of Father Ted this evening. It wouldn’t be Christmas Eve without it :celebrate:

Getting ahead of myself this year. Chestnut and cranberry stuffing, and Jamie Oliver gravy stage one complete. Also dry brined the turkey for the first time ever. A maverick move, I think you’ll agree.View attachment 287455
Did you use buttermilk for the brine? Tried and tested method at mine. I say that then must admit I didn’t do it this time as life took over and I am not just as prepared as usual. Even so, with plenty of herbed butter and smoked streaky bacon I can still nail this!

Is that your families Christmas Eve ritual AT?

We have one . Mrs J prepares the Christmas dinner this am whilst I do the cleaning.

Then out to lunch ( usually but not always a Chinese). This afternoon wrap the pressies before settling down to watch It's a Wonderful Life with some bubbles. Our routine was wrecked last year when we had guests staying for Christmas who , shock horror, didn't want to "watch a black and white film". Idiots. Anyway nothing's getting in the way today.

Hope that everyone has a peaceful and enjoyable Christmas Eve.

Pretty much is our routine yeah. Lunch out at the local gives us the last chance to wish our mates a Happy Christmas but it also frees me up from normal cooking beyond the big meal prep. We will have quite a few guests tomorrow for a pre-lunch drink and need to get the place spotless for that. The plan is just to buy some pre-made canapés and make things as easy as we can.

A Wonderful Life is just a perfect way to embrace what the season is really about. In a different way, Father Ted is that for me as I don’t remember not watching it with family at this time. I could act it myself by now!

I hope the day goes well and you realise that they are helpers ,the meaning is in the word ,they are not trying to push you out ,just help . It is so nice for Kay to be back home and walking a bit ,it will come back but as you say slowly . Stay strong that man and eenjoy Xmas .

Thank you blue, and of course you are correct. It’ll just feel a bit strange though tbh……

Morning all, and Happy Christmas Eve. It’s lovely to read about rituals and how Christmas traditions are made and kept up. Like a few of you we will be doing a bit of housework this morning. We usually go out for a meal with my son and his wife but this year with the baby we are just going on our own tonight to our favourite local restaurant. Then tomorrow we are at theirs with the in laws for our first joined up family Christmas Day. We have all pitched in and done different bits of the Christmas dinner - I think it might be chaotic but I’m definitely up for that.
Once again my son has made me hold a mirror up to my behaviour as apparently he’s got a quiz for tomorrow for us all and I’ve been warned not to get too competitive 😂.
For those celebrating today have a wonderful time, hope all’s well with the scan @anjelikaferrett and you can relax and enjoy your early Christmas Day. Having strangers in your home is never easy @peteblue and it never could be comparable to the care you give to your lovely wife because of all the love you pour into it, but I hope it works well for you and your son and gives you both a bit of time to yourselves.
My film of the day if you can call it that is The Snowman (with the Bowie introduction). The little boy always makes me think of my son when he was little. I watched Love Actually (again) - very cheesy I know but the end of the film where they play The Beach Boys God only knows, and show all those people meeting at the airport just makes me sob like the big softy I am.
Enjoy your day everyone 💙🎅🎄🥂

Morning all, Happy Christmas Eve and Happy Christmas to @anjelikaferrett and @blue1948. It’s a beautiful morning and as I don’t have enough to do I’m currently debating whether to make a last minute trip to the retail park ( only a ten minute walk) to buy some more parsnips. The husband assures me we have enough, no one likes them anyway - I’m not so sure. Have to sort out present delivery for later without Jess seeing us, she’s the only one now who believes in Father Christmas which is sad that it’s all coming to an end. We are off to hear the Carols on the Green in the village near us this evening. I’m not a believer but I do love a Christmas Carol. It came upon the midnight clear is my favourite but it’s not sung very often, shame because the words seem particularly relevant today.
Have a good day, all.💙

If you can stomach it ( a visit to Tesco or Lidl that is) they are only 15 p at the minute.

Our sheep and goats have never ate so well 😂

Used a dry brine, so just salt and brown sugar with lots of herbs. It’ll get a whole pack of butter (with more herbs) and the stuffing before going in the oven in the morning. Just put together my prep to-do list for today/tomorrow so I should probably get my arse off this couch and get going!!
