Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Yes. Very similar. Also late 60s early 70s. My nan took a piece of coal with her and when she came back in my Grandad gave her some money. Never quite worked out why that was but he did it every year. Used to love listening to the ships on the Mersey at New Year.

Also they would ring the speaking clock to make sure the time was absolutely right! It was like a military operation when I look back now. :D
Got 3 tons of it on my land - for my coal Log fire .....

Well glad I didn't go to my sisters, my nephews partner felt ill this morning and has done a covid test, she is positive ffs, my sister has health issues which could make covid really bad, not an ideal situation
Is it a lateral test they are so unreliable, tell her to get a proper test done at a drive in centre ...... My son got a positive reading before Christmas - we all went to the drive in centre he was clear ....as we were thankfully...

Hope she gets the same result negative ;)

Oh hope she gets well soon. Has she done a PCR test. It seems that this Omicron one has milder symptoms than the other types so here's hoping she isn't too bad with it especially if she's had all her jabs. Always a worry though.

Same situation here now, sister in laws partner who we were with for Christmas dinner has tested positive, I also have an underlying condition which makes getting covid far from ideal but at least it's not deadly like it could have been pre vaccination and booster. Chances are we don't have it as we haven't showed any symptoms yet but waiting to get over that five day period

Morning all

@blue1948
@Gwladysover
@anjelikaferrett

we seem to be the only ones up at this ungodly hour.

Well it might be be mild but it's chucking it down here.

Anyone got any plans for the New Year? I've never really enjoyed it. When younger and going out everywhere was too busy and you couldn't get a cab home. I remember one in particular where we left town at 1am , tried to get a cab at the top of Bold St and ended up walking home to Huyton. Not sure how Mrs J managed that in heels!

I think we were scarred by that and then stayed local and gradually as we got older and moved further and further out of town just went out less.

So plans for the big night - chinese takeaway fairly early on , some vino with bubbles later and welcome in the New Year with Jools Holland.

Do you still follow the tradition of the darkest person bringing the New Year into the front door ? Since Mrs J is a redhead and I'm grey it will fall to Susie our black as coal withches cat. Amazing what she'll do for some Dreamies.

Have a lovely day everyone.
Before the kids were born, me and my missus would usually go to a New Year's dinner and dance at a hotel, sometimes with another couple, with an overnight stay. You'd get dinner, a live band, DJ, have a dance, not worry about getting home and a cooked breakfast next morning.

It was much better value, and not that much difference in price, from being charged double the usual price for a "special New Year's Eve menu" at a restaurant and double for the taxi. The taxi also had to be booked in advance, so you had one eye on the time in the days before we got a text telling us our taxi was outside.

Just about every party I've ever been too has been, at best, meh. When the kids were little, we used to spend it with a couple who had kids a similar age to ours. We'd alternate between our homes each year, the hosts providing a buffet, and we'd leave well before midnight as we had young kids.

This New Year's Eve, my son will be back at his Uni house for a party with friends, so me, the missus and my daughter will have a Chinese takeaway and a few drinks. We'll probably see in the New Year, but won't be bothered if we don't.

I suffer from COPD and have tested positive for Omicron. Don't feel great but it just feels like a heavy cold. No shortage of breath.

Have you had a test?
