Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

One of the things I love about down here is that the fishing is nearly all sustainable and also most of the farming practices are organic and environmentally friendly. Most of the supermarkets will have their "local" section and all the village shops will have meat and dairy products sourced locally too, plus a lot of the veg. Most cafe's and restaurants that you go in source locally too. It's brilliant.

Our High Street butcher does that as well. He even has a big display board telling you the actual farms he gets his meats and eggs from. All within a few miles of the shop. And his prices aint that much different from Sainsburys. And even better, you can ask for 2 or 3 sausages, instead of a packet of 8.

To a great extent the same is going on here ,it is so much more wild here than the UK and nature is so plentiful .
We have a thing here called "everyman's right " which means I can pick fruit and mushrooms and fish free as long as I am not within sight of the owner's house .
I have eaten potatoes less than 20 mins after they were picked and eaten fish on the side of the lake .I love to do that and as it is free !

Not getting into an argument but there are farmed fish as much as farmed meat ,I watched Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall river cottage and he catches all kinds but a lot such as mussels are farmed ,we are by the way having mussels tonight as they come in fresh on Thursdays -from a farm in Denmark . I just mean there are many factors to consider and of course me and @Barnfred 55 will gloss over most.
No mate. Not everything is perfect. If you look at the fish I buy in most of it will be farmed or bulk caught like cod or haddock. But if you wanted to down here (I can't obviously because I don't drive) you can source all of your seafood locally. You may not be able to get cod but you can get fish like pollock which is just as nice and much more sustainable. Since the first lockdown when the fishing guys lost a lot of their custom, many started selling direct to the public and they've kept up the practice as they have a better mark up than selling to agents, retailers and restaurants. Most will deliver too. It's a new market and the fishermen and the public are all doing well out of it. Out of adversity and all that.....

For my birthday lunch I'll be going to the Ferryboat Inn on the Helford and I'll be having mussels, most likely sourced from the Fal or the Fowey.

Saturday isn't it ? Your mussels will be fresher but ours were still alive .The Finns laugh at cod as it has no flavour of its own .

Nice pub that. Been there a few times

I've probably mentioned this once, or maybe even twice before, but amongst it's regulars can be found such illustrious names as Caroline Quentin, Kate Bush, and Roger Taylor. Apparently Kate Moss has also been seen there being a regular guest at the Taylor mansion. Not that I've ever seen any of them mind you. It get's absolutely manic in the summer but the locals get to enjoy it this time of year.

Hi everybody. How's it going? I don't know where today has gone - in training all morning looking at extremist behaviour and does it transfer to the workplace. Quite interesting actually. Loads of admin to do this afternoon so although busy, not very productive. It's very windy here this afternoon and also very cold because of the wind.

@Methuselah. how are you and your wife doing? I've been thinking of you a lot over the last few days. I hope you don't mind me sharing this. In 2017 my Mum was diagnosed with bone cancer. She didn't want treatment but, to be honest, she had avoided the doctor for so long, I'm not sure that treatment would have been an option anyway. However it was her decision and we had to respect it. The doctors said three months at most. We made sure that Mum was on the right medication and was as pain free and as comfortable as possible. We had nine more months with her - and it was good quality of life. If Mrs M is adamant that she does not want treatment then there is no reason why she cannot enjoy a good quality of life with little pain. I'm sure you're awesome daughters will have thought of all that though. Much love to you all x

@Terrarian are you OK? Hope the meds are still working and did you try any of the new suggested shopping list items?

I highly doubt anyone on here would be even slightly bothered by you sharing, Anj.

I'm truly sorry you and your Mum had to go through that, cancer is one absolute C word of a disease.

How are you doing today M. Although you may have been fearing the worst (you always do in these situations) it still comes as a massive shock to the system when your fears are confirmed.

Do you mind my asking what type of cancer Mrs M has. It has only just been diagnosed and very often they don't decide on the treatment required until further tests, and sometimes an operation, have been carried out. Your wife may not even need chemotherapy. My wife had breast cancer and she didn't have chemo.
Its a rather odd situation. My wife has asbestosis. In her teens, she worked at BBA (British Belting and Asbestos) for several years and even though she was office based she obviously picked it up from somewhere. It's taken all this time to show itself.

Anjelika Many thanks for your lovely post. Some very useful information there too. It doesn't help much that I am under the weather at the moment with both Doc and Hospital appointments over the next few days. Could do with getting sorted asap.

Hang on in there for now mate. You will be assigned a specialist consultant and I would avoid over thinking things until you and your family have had a chance to sit down with them to go through the prognosis in detail. My recommendation is that you have at ;east one of your daughters with you at that first meeting, not just to offer support but so they can fully understand the depth of the situation too. Hope you get yourself sorted out quickly so you can concentrate on Mrs M.
