2019/20 Michael Keane

Rice gave an even worse pass away for the second, under no pressure, and Henderson (won't get mentioned) made the worst attempted header/block you'll ever see, the big dope.

Then Maguire completely turns into Phil Jones for the penalty.

The mistakes for the second and third goals were much worse than Keane's.
That Henderson one was unbelievable. Honestly can't think of a worse piece of defending than that that I've seen recently.

More generally, I don't know why people are getting wound up about him being criticised. It was a truly horrendous error, there's no getting away from it. It was a poor ball from Barkley but he didn't need to do that with it. If he did it for us we'd be furious so why is anyone surprised that people are furious when he does it for England?

Do you reckon that he is 4th generation HongKongCockwomble?

I couldn't care less, I don't know who half of these posters are, they post about two times before I stick them in ignore and see the odd post when I see other members getting rilled by them

On the positive side, at least he didn't allow the mistake to affect him. He got on with the game and he contributed to the equaliser. The entire defence looked iffy at one point or another, so although Keane had the headline grabbing mistake he was by no means the only offender.

There’s huge limitations all over the England team that are not being called out. Alexander Arnold plays like he’s part of Klopp’s kick and rush ball just charging forward moronically at any opportunity. He was nowhere to be seen for most of the goals against Kosovo. Maguire and Keane are what they are, decent premier league centrebacks who are good in the air and positionally decent. Both can be pressured in possession and neither have pace. Chilwell is probably the pick of the back line.

The midfield is extremely average and offers nothing in my view. Imagine those three coming up against Kante Pogba Matuidi or even Modric Rakitic Kovacic again. It would be embarrassing.

The only positions we have truly class players in upfront.

Sadly the media though like to play the game of spot the Everton player in an England team and blame them for everything. Apparently we would have won the 2014 World Cup if Baines hadn’t have played at left back.

Honestly don't know where some of you are looking, there are players being called out left right and centre in the media and you're all sat in here saying nobody's mentioned anything about anyone except Keane. Proper tin foil hat stuff.

I normally switch itv pundits off asap but I'm pretty sure Dixon got stuck into the defence and midfield, as has the press from what I've seen. How could you not? Last nights game was absurdly entertaining for an England qualifier, but it didn't look like a team that was going to win anything in the near future.

I hope there's some good defenders in the pipeline. Maybe Holding if he stays fit, Wan-Bissaka too, he looks like someone who actually wants to defend...

He’s being criticised for a horrible mistake which is fair enough imo

That is true but equal criticism should be made of Barkley, he should have passed forward, and Keane should have kicked it upfield instead of across.

But he did have the assist for Sterling to scoren ow why is that not being praised?

Barkley is being criticised, just read a paper or something, it's all there! It's not equal criticism, because Keane had the chance to stop Barkley's error being a problem, but instead made it worse, so he is more to blame.

His assist is also being mentioned, but he's in the team to defend, not to let people divert his misdirected headers on target, so the focus is on his mistake.

He's not a terrible player, but he's not a particularly good one either. He made a howler last night and cost England a goal for the second time in this qualifying group. Does anyone remember the Stones error against Holland? Of course you do, because the media never stopped talking about it - BECAUSE IT'S THEIR JOB. They haven't got it in for Keane or Everton players, they just write about what happens, and what happened last night was Keane made a monumental cockup in the first minute of the game. Get over it.

Neither of them are good enough on the ball for this England side.

Keane made a crap decision yesterday, after being given a crap pass to deal with from Barkley.

But he's generally good on the ball. And of the four 'first choice' England CBs (Maguire, Stones, Gomez, Keane) he's probably the worst on the ball, even though he's quite good. Tarkowski/Dunk would make many more errors playing out from the back, though with Potter in at Brighton, Dunk may improve in that respect.

Tarkowski and Dunk are victims of the systems they play in at club level really, both very good defenders. Very rarely get an opportunity to play the ball on the deck. Both were targeted by Leicester this summer and I think, in difference circumstances, both could have already been playing for top six clubs now.

The problem is not the criticism of Keane it is the lack of criticism of others who made equal or worse mistakes.

Surely you can criticise or at least reference Keane's mistake without acknowledging that other defenders make mistakes.

All defenders make mistakes, but if Maguire makes a mistake it's less relevant to Everton. It also doesn't negate Keane's mistake.

Aye it was bad all round.

Think the thing with Keane is he does rarely make errors. It's just when he does they always end up in a goal. The last one I can think of for us would be Leicester at home last season.
