2020/21 Michael Keane

He and Mina are still our best CB pairing when both fit.

Yes they are when we're playing the low block and defending our 6 yard box.

Keane has been very good for us this season but we have had to play to his strengths this season and the football we have to play to maximise his strengths is absolutely terrible.

Hopefully we won't be playing that football next season and we can move the defensive line further up the pitch. Unfortunately we've seen how keane plays when he has to leave space behind him. Hes quite possibly the worst defender I've ever seen at defending a ball over the top. He constantly looses the flight of the ball and alwasy allows the ball to bounce which gives the attacker a chance to get it.

I hope our cb pairing will he Godfrey and mina next season but I have a feeling mina will be sold in the summer tbh.

Think he went into a bit of a sulk after Gareth Waistcoat left him out of the last England squad, was in good form before that but the standard dipped,Spurs at home being the stand out one....

I think it's more that he's slow on the turn, over 3-5 yards. And he is.

A for Keane seems to be about partner and confidence. He doesn't look right at all next to Holgate to me. Next to Mina he looks a completely different player. I know we had similar when we 1st signed him and compared him t what he did at Burnley. Next to Williams/Jagielka he was poor but next to Zouma he looked very good.

What I would say, is that he needs a reliable, physical player next to him who he can rely upon. I don't think he's a natural leader, but put him next to one and he does well.

There's no doubt in my mind that our best partnership at CB is Mina/Keane. Godfrey I think has enough about him to get into the team in different positions, but presently they are my preferred back two.
I think Godfrey made two or three good strong runs dow the right flank last night, I think he is capable of doing a few more of them but s reluctant to do them because he realises his speed is needed at the back because of the lack of pace of Mina and Keane, for a young player he has a good responsible attitude even while he is still learning the game.

I will never forget a goal Rom scored against Burnley, turned him like he wasnt there.

But honestly, bar him missing the flight of that ball for Cavani he hasnt put a foot wrong in about 18 months, I do see his weaknesses, but they havent really been a factor for me, hes been without doubt our most consistent and best CB for a while now.

People claim playing deep harms our attack, it takes 5 seconds to move the ball from the edge of our area to the edge of the other teams area and thats not even including the 1 second it does if you hoof. The ball travels faster than any player and if we played at a higher tempo we could move the ball much quicker.

Have you forgotten the Tottenham game mate?

When you say the football is terrible do you mean on the eye or the results? Becuase on the eye is fine if we our winning.
I also think if we sell one it will be Mina but mainly becuase I think we can do better from a buisness point of view on him then we can selling Keane, also Keane did sign a new fully deserved extension a while ago.

Personally I think apart from the first few games of the season the football we've played has been horrendous. This has been some of the worst football I've seen us play for a long time.

Our tactics next season cant be try to nick a goal off a set piece then defend for our lives the rest of the match. I actually want to dominant a few games and win by more then one goal.

So it's Ancelotti version of hoof-ball we have to look forward to? Keane is a decent squad player and will fit in for games where we need to defend in numbers or to bring on to close out tight games. But he just doesn't have the speed of thought to get us where we want to be.

I didnt mention hoof, the best teams in the world can turn defence into attack within 5 seconds.

People blaming Keane for our inability to create chances is quite the take.

Not blaming Keane for our inability to score, but if we do get more dynamic faster midfielders then they'll need the ball recycling quickly and sadly he's not the man for that. Plus he can be bullied. As I said, good squad member but if we want to seriously break into the top four we need better.

Not blaming Keane for our inability to score? That’s good of you. Gets bullied? Pish.

Look, we all want to see better football than this season. Get some better quality ball players in midfield/wide midfield and that’ll make a massive difference.

If we get better at keeping the ball in the other team’s half then, yes, the defence moves up the pitch and players like Keane and Mina are vulnerable to balls down the channel and space in behind them. Are you seriously trying to tell me there are no slow defenders playing for teams that try to play with the ball in the other teams half?

What really matters is, as a team, how quickly you win the ball back or get back into defensive position behind the ball when you lose it. As a team we’ve been terrible at that. There needs to be balance otherwise playing a high line with no pressure on the ball is asking for trouble, particularly with slow defenders. I agree with you there.

There are defenders who lack pace but are clever readers of the game, sadly Keane isn't one of them. His passing is good when he's not under pressure. Take a look at a few games earlier this season and he does get bullied. It's why he's far better with Mina. If you think he should be a starter at CB next season that's your opinion, but welcome to the seventh place trophy scramble, again.

So its Keanes fault we are in 8th?
