If there are problems relating to his mind set and confidence issues then surely we need to ensure he has ongoing contact with a sport psychologist or other experts in the field . I am sure he will realise that his current form requires improvement and he should be seeking to adress the issues himself as well.
My limited understanding of employment law is that if that type of provision of assistance fails then there may be grounds to consider a termination on the grounds that he is unable to fulfill the terms of his contract.
