2022/23 Michael Keane

He was because he dangled a weak leg out at a ball that then fell to Felix rather than just clearing it properly. He’s got all these sort of errors in him because he doesn’t do things with conviction (bizarrely that strike is the second thing I’ve ever seen him do at Everton that’s had a bit of conviction behind it).

When he turns his back on a shot and dangles a leg at it and it deflects past the keeper, that’s on him in my book. Deflections are far less likely to go on when a defender runs straight on with purpose to make a block.

When he’s jumping with his eyes closed and misses the ball and the striker puts it in behind him, that’s on him,

When he gives pens away because he does a pros and cons list before clearing the ball, it’s on him.

All those moments of panic in the box when the ball is either side of him and he’s just hesitating.

He’ll never be a top player. He’s ok in the low block but he’ll always have mistakes in him because he’s not quick of speed or thought and doesn’t have conviction in what he does. He’ll always give pens away because he’s late to react, there’ll always be deflections because he hangs back on blocks, the diagonal cross will always catch him out. It’s happened under every manager in every formation.

Dyche seems to like him with Tarkowski and tbh Coady was making just as many errors and Mina isn’t long for this club by the looks of it so let’s keep an ok pairing together until the end of the season but I can guarantee we are going nowhere with Keane at centreback. Nowhere.

Next season i’d like to see Tarkowski with one of Branthwaite or Godfrey partnering him with another new CB competing after we’ve sold Mina Keane and Holgate.
Keane is ten times the centre half Godfrey is mate, I don't get the shouts tbh. But I'd like to see Branthwaite given a proper go next season alright.

I’d like to see Godfrey get the chances Keane gets and then see. Godfrey makes one error and Everton fans deem him deserving of an extended stay out the team. Keane makes multiple errors and it’s excuse after excuse for him. One of these players is young enough to improve and has the pace and athleticism to potentially be a decent centreback. The other has never and will never be a top centreback yet we keep indulging his mistakes instead of giving a young CB a chance.

So I take it you kept your hands in your pockets and didn't applaud Keane at the end? You must be in a tiny minority. I was ecstatic and lost my voice.

Godfrey has had chances, and blown them
he has also had shocking games, look at Burnley away towards the end of last season, that was disgraceful.
He can play, but he he has never looked like a center back in any shape way or form.

He’s never had a game as bad for Everton as some of the ones Keane has produced. Keane gets so many chances it’s unbelievable though whereas when Godfrey makes an error Everton fans love pouncing on it.

I’d like to see Godfrey in a back line that doesn’t contain Keane.

Yeah because Keane has done good stuff too, Godfrey have never really done anything. Squad player, who hasn't even got a set spot.

Godfrey in a back line that doesn't contain Keane isn't even possible with our squad.

For those games where we're likely to be under pressure, perhaps Keane should be promoted to a holding midfield role in front of a Coady Tarkowski back line.

Playing Godfrey in this set up is as ill advised as playing Keane in a system where he’s got to play a high line. Godfrey’s not an edge of the box defender, he’s weak as piss in the air and he’s not getting to use his pace much because there’s no big spaces on behind for him to cover.
