He was because he dangled a weak leg out at a ball that then fell to Felix rather than just clearing it properly. He’s got all these sort of errors in him because he doesn’t do things with conviction (bizarrely that strike is the second thing I’ve ever seen him do at Everton that’s had a bit of conviction behind it).
When he turns his back on a shot and dangles a leg at it and it deflects past the keeper, that’s on him in my book. Deflections are far less likely to go on when a defender runs straight on with purpose to make a block.
When he’s jumping with his eyes closed and misses the ball and the striker puts it in behind him, that’s on him,
When he gives pens away because he does a pros and cons list before clearing the ball, it’s on him.
All those moments of panic in the box when the ball is either side of him and he’s just hesitating.
He’ll never be a top player. He’s ok in the low block but he’ll always have mistakes in him because he’s not quick of speed or thought and doesn’t have conviction in what he does. He’ll always give pens away because he’s late to react, there’ll always be deflections because he hangs back on blocks, the diagonal cross will always catch him out. It’s happened under every manager in every formation.
Dyche seems to like him with Tarkowski and tbh Coady was making just as many errors and Mina isn’t long for this club by the looks of it so let’s keep an ok pairing together until the end of the season but I can guarantee we are going nowhere with Keane at centreback. Nowhere.
Next season i’d like to see Tarkowski with one of Branthwaite or Godfrey partnering him with another new CB competing after we’ve sold Mina Keane and Holgate.
