Migrant Crisis

taking into account on here as well as accross the country.

What are the percentage who are sat on their couch doing the 'help the migrants!' routine that aren't arsed to get up and do something about it bar sharing a picture on facebook?

then when the migrants are cleaning the toilets and doing all the basic jobs to get by, these people will be claiming their jobs are being taken and how dare we let these people in the country etc?

Thats my social observation

What a lot of people are concerned about NOW, is when we might need to take a strategic pause and have a stock-take on our capacity to absorb more. Some might argue that we've already reached that point.

Those same people would probably have had no objections to accepting the needy until the point is reached that they feel over-crowding and/or a drain on resources is taking its toll. For a great many people, they've reached that point. For genuine refugees fleeing death, destruction etc. there should always be some way we can accommodate them. But many people are saying that we can't blithely carry on accepting economic migrants.

I just want to know if there's a point when your own moral compass is re-calibrated.

The above isnt my over-riding concern in all of this - I'm only trying to stimulate the debate through what I'm hearing and being told by people I live, work and socialise with. My main concern is keeping tabs on who is coming out of those conflict zones, and trying to keep some semblance of tabs on them. I firmly believe we should pro use refuge for genuine cases, but we should be doing so in conjunction with as much control as possible for everyone's sake - including those who are hoping to find safety from said bad guys.

great post. i think this whole debate is fuelled by what you are asking. from what is being said here and now i think we all have different view points on how many people we can take on, what is a healthy amount for us to do. have we already done enough? that is why people are getting quite heated about it. we all have a differing take on the situation.

I have answered this really clearly. you want an answer you can jump on and call unrealistic. you didn't get one. live with it

The Australian government are the farcical right stuck in the 1980's in their views perspectives and policy who can't treat their indigenous people well let alone migrants.

They aren't a very good example of what a country should aspire to be or to do.

I saw today that a riled Bob Geldof has offered to house some refugee families in his Kent pad, Davington Priory (just outside Faversham), about 1/2 mile from where we live. Fair play even if the offer is unlikely to be taken up.
