minor things that make you fume

This old chestnut.
Driving earlier with a clear road in front of me. 200 yards further on a parked car on the other side of the road to me. Approaching the parked car a car coming the opposite way to me decides not to pass it as it would have put him on a collision course with me so waits for me to drive by. As I did he sounds his car horn and gives me the middle finger, presumably because I didn't acknowledge his gesture of not driving into me.
At this point I've got to say I honestly usually acknowledge such actions, but I was engrossed by some politician spouting cack on the radio and didn't.
So the thing is, why do drivers want praising for doing what is the correct action in the first place?
I feel like its common courtesy, I would always thank someone for doing it. It's like holding the door open for someone in my eyes. My sister never thanks people and it proper does my head in.

I hate it when people don't acknowledge. Really gets my blood boiling

Me too as my original post mentioned.
But should it be expected when we are only doing what should be done in the circumstances?
I think that it's a common courtesy to other road users. I'm amazed at how many drivers don't even bother to indicate these days. It doesn't exactly require much effort, but, so many drivers can't be bothered to do this.

I do this to be honest. It’s just politeness.

People have stopped indicating on motorways now. It’s mental. Nearly had a couple of really bad accidents due to other’s laziness.

Courtesy being the watchword.
Doesn't take much to act in a polite manner, but we are talking about driving standards here, and I'm afraid common sense seems to go out of the window when getting behind the wheel.

The town I live in is fairly compact you can walk from one town boundary to the opposite side in 20 minutes, yet the electric scooters that nearly run you over are all operated by those who are clearly young fit and able to walk.
