Look at the new airport in Beijing, it's an absolute work of art. Daxing airport.
Additionally, get yourself a Priority Pass and you won't need to settle for overpriced beer/coffee/food again, plus you'll always have a comfy seat, place to charge your devices, wifi, sometimes even showers, etc. You can find a pass for around 150 pounds which gives you access to lounges 10 times in the year, so 15 quid a pop. Worth it if you are a frequent flyer or spend lots of time in airports before flights, etc.
Let's say a beer costs a fiver and a decent sandwich another fiver. You're only paying another fiver on top for as much food (standards vary, but it's usually decent to good) and alcohol as you want, plus all the above-mentioned comforts.
I used to try and get to the airport as late as possible to just make my flights so I don't need to wait around, but now I am happy to be there 2 hours earlier and just relax in the lounge.
