2017/18 Morgan Schneiderlin

As it's been covered repeatedly that the vast majority can't stand him, would be interesting to hear what people think would be a way of turning things around for him and how he could contribute to the team for the rest of the season. Assuming he will stay in the Squad until the summer at least...

I personally think he's a good player that has suffered from losing personnel in the side from last season and being wrongly used by the manager. Of course his performances and attitude have been poor for large spells this season but the manager's must take some blame too. I think the losses of Barkley and Lukaku have really impacted on the whole midfield this season because whatever people think of Barkley, he had the ability to drive forward with pace and both him and Lukaku gave us a threat in the final 3rd.

Last season, we got away with playing Gana and Schneiderlin regularly to good effect, as well as having Davies alongside them. All 3 worked great and I think that's because they were able to play to their strengths and get the ball to more attack minded players. Gana and Schneiderlin are very limited in their creativity and their game relies on winning the ball in the middle and giving it quickly to better players. This season, the only creative player we have in the middle is Rooney and he lacks the pace that Barkley had.

For the rest of the season, Allardyce has to recognise that Gana and Schneiderlin will not work together unless they have someone with pace to pick up the ball ahead of them. In the current squad, Walcott and Vlasic could potentially be that missing link that would compliment Gana and Schneiderlin playing in the same team, but I don't see Allardyce using them in that way. Therefore, he simply has to drop one of them and I think nearly all would agree it should be Gana who starts. So I don't go along with the opinion that Schneiderlin is awful, but like many problems caused by whichever manager we've had this season, he needs to be utilised correctly and what is being tried at the moment is quite clearly not working.

There are a lot of good points here, but I'd point out that the whole idea of two DMs and a third midfielder to win the ball is not one that you see very often here or in Europe and especially not with teams that are doing well. It is a luxury we cannot afford and it must change, or the same performances will result in worsening results as the few positives of the past few years decide to go off to better times elsewhere. Him and Gana cannot play together and shouldn't.

Our system has to change; personally I think we would much better suit a 3-5-2 (Mangala - Keane (or Williams or Jagielka or RFM) - Holgate and either Martina or Garbutt on the left, Coleman on the right, with Gana in DM, Davies and Siggy ahead of him, Tosun up front and Walcott flitting about), but change is desperately needed because what we are doing is not working and has never really worked.

edit: forgot about Keane

Cleverley, Tim Howard, Louis Saha.

Not often that one of those deals works out.

Honestly if you keep buying from the same place after being stung that many times you need your head checking.
Howard was alright besides his last few seasons. He's a good lad and shouldn't be in a list with Cleverley or Saha.

Arguably the only value for money we received from Utd.

Supporters will forgive a lot if the player tries his hardest. Niasse and Straq are classic examples, limited footballers but cult heroes because they never gave less than 100% and seem to appreciate the privileged lives they live.

Schneiderlin is the opposite. A very talented player , a player that impressed so much that Utd paid a lot of money for him and when we did the same we thought it was a real coup. I don't know what has gone wrong or why, but, he looks disinterested, plays within his ability and provides zero leadership although playing in a position normally occupied by leaders in the team.
I can only imagine his family have not settled or there is disharmony in the squad because something is not right... and that has been the case under three managers this season.

I suppose the difference is that Niasse and Straq had to fight to be in the team; Schneiderlin doesn't.

We looked much better against Leicester with Davies and Gueye, and Davies has been shocking all season. He is starting to look a bit better, still offers more than Schneiderlin though.

the thing with Ssch is he doesn't like football (why would you when you play the role he does, destroyer) and unfortunately for us, he's on his last ocntract. His game is all about putting his body in harm's way, and wanting to be the best. And if there is no clear gain for him, he's probably thinking, ride it out, get the pay off, and start to enjoy life.

Hard to disagree with this. Speak to any Southampton fan and they'll sing his praises - Mr consistency, superb attitude with performances 7/10 minimum and usually an 8 or a 9 [recall a Soton fan chatting on this site's podcast saying precisely this]. He's here now and he's still Mr consistency, but with a repellant attitude and performances 3/10 maximum and usually a 2 or a 1.
So obviously there's been a complete volte face in his approach to the game and don't see how you put this right - [although he's only 28, thought he was older].

It's weird tbh, as being the type of player who grafts week-in week-out, very dependable, is part of your character and who you are. So it's hard to know what's happened here - maybe the move to the Utd circus and it not working out was sort of an endpoint for him.

He can obviously play football, or he could play football at one stage. It is also obvious he can't or won't play now. I tend to try a simplify things as much as they can be simplified in order to solve the problem. In the case of Schneiderlin I would speak to him to see what he feels are the issues and why he feels he isn't performing to his optimal level. If it is something that can be fixed without affecting the overall team or better players then I would try to accommodate him. If he feels we need whole scale changes which put the team in jeopardy, or should I say more jeopardy, then I would sell him on as he is no use as he is.
We can't keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect the result to be different.

I'll fully admit, the Schneiderlin that United bought from Southampton was the real deal. I even wanted us to sign him as he looked like what Matic was doing at Chelsea. Around 2013 he was getting Game/Kante stats for tackles etc.

But he soon got found out quickly at United, and I mean quick. If you go hiding at United, you soon get exposed.

Maybe he relied on Wanyama a bit too much, made him look "better" in that season. But clearly, mentally, he thinks he's either better than he is or he just shuts off when things don't go his way.

Either way, I can't see a way back from him.

I think for every player there is a point of no return, and he has just about reached it. I'm shocked that our manager has the audacity to keep picking him. FFS Beningime and Davies are better options right now and they are still learning the trade.
