There are a lot of good points here, but I'd point out that the whole idea of two DMs and a third midfielder to win the ball is not one that you see very often here or in Europe and especially not with teams that are doing well. It is a luxury we cannot afford and it must change, or the same performances will result in worsening results as the few positives of the past few years decide to go off to better times elsewhere. Him and Gana cannot play together and shouldn't.

Our system has to change; personally I think we would much better suit a 3-5-2 (Mangala - Keane (or Williams or Jagielka or RFM) - Holgate and either Martina or Garbutt on the left, Coleman on the right, with Gana in DM, Davies and Siggy ahead of him, Tosun up front and Walcott flitting about), but change is desperately needed because what we are doing is not working and has never really worked.

edit: forgot about Keane
Agree with some of this but the talk of changing formation is mental, we've tried 3/5 at the back and get destroyed every single time no matter who the manager.

Pretty sure every time we've done it recently have been 5 goals conceded etc

People act as if it'll be a fluid 3-5-2 with wing backs bombing on and a compact 3 in midfield but it isn't. It's literally a flat back 5, camped on the edge of our box leaving massive holes further up the pitch. Until we get a proper left back and some centre halves that can play football we will never be able to play the 3 at the back formation.

Completely agree.

Everton are not equipped for a 3/5 at the back.

I couldn't disagree more with the two of you - what I was advocating is the way Wales played at their best under Coleman, which was very similar to the way we played against City last season.

To play it right we do need a left back, but it would work and we have the players to do it.

Wales got their full backs high up the pitch. Coleman can do that job but Baines can't any more, his legs have gone and he barely even tries to get forward these days. Cuco Martina most certainly cannot play that role.

In the centre of defence we have one centre back with pace - Holgate. Jagielka and Williams are barely Premier League footballers anymore, I think Keane could fit into a back 3 but we'd need a left sided centre back who is comfortable on the ball and can pass out into midfield (i.e. not Funes Mori or Mangala) to make it work. In short, we're two first team players away from being able to make that formation work the way it's supposed to.

Mangala could do the left-sided centre back role whilst he is here, but when Galloway comes back from wasting his time at Sland I think that role would be perfect for him. As for the left back, yes we need one but I really do not see why Garbutt cannot be at least given from now until the end of the season to do it, and he could do that (get high up the pitch).

come off it, galloway wont play for our 1st team again unless we go down.

He is rubbish mate. So is Morgan Schneiderlin, who I wouldn't have in our team whatever formation we play.

Agree, I think some fans need to forget his purple patch from several years ago. I don't even know if he can make it in the championship. I do think Holgate should be getting more minutes though. He has a future.

His purple patch came when we actually played him for more than one game in a row, and even then he was played out of his normal position and was better than Baines was when he came back. Since then he's been (edit) deemed not good enough for a team that has had Williams, Alcaraz, Martina et al in it for months at a time - and sent on loan to a WBA team in a mess, and a Sland team that will define mess for a generation.

He is basically yet another one of those players we have mismanaged to the point where they look rubbish, in the ten minute cameos they are afforded with two or three months separating them.

We don't have anyone, literally anyone, at the club who could perform that left wing back role adequately. Until we get that player, it shouldn't even be considered
