I think Shiny Happy People is the reason for the 'sellout shouts' - It's a horrendous song which the band themselves despise

That album has so much beauty on it though - Especially 'Country Feedback' and 'Half a World Away'

Country Feedback makes me tingle. Not their most accessible track but absolutely brilliant, just a wonderfully raw song. I didn't like it at first but it grew on me.

I actually don't hate Shiny Happy People. It's exactly what they set it out to be, a "big dumb pop song".

Also the video is tremendous with everyone hamming it up except Peter Buck who refuses to get involved with such capers.

I don't see it being any more of a sell out track as Stand (which I also like) for example.

Ah right. Even more reason I stopped buying their stuff.

I have a massive respect for Radiohead because they did the exact opposite when they blew up. Creep was their sellout moment I guess, but they kept pushing the envelope with each record.

Didn't Radiohead hate Creep until recently and never played it live?

I adore Country Feedback - Funeral song right there

I think i hate Shiny so much because it's what most casual listeners think of when they hear the name REM and it's so unlike the majority of their catalogue

I will agree that Stand was their initial sellout moment. Shiney just made me cringe though.

Makes it all worthwhile.

By the way Peter Buck is a massively underrated guitarist. Just thought I would throw that out there.

I would say its Losing My Religion or Everybody Hurts more these days.

I can't totally hate anything with Kate Pierson in either.

Anyway we've gotten on an REM sidetrack.

Remember children, U2 is the correct answer.

Yeah kind of. Mind you some of the earlier stuff was alright and I kind of like Achtung Baby.

I suppose considering how big they were/are I should be thinking better of them than them just being alrightish though.

My picks would probably be The Ramones, loads of T-shirts, not so many actual songs and Kiss, fun gimmick but not much behind that.

Never really got Metallica either.
