Moutinho - all talk in here please.

Nor i on the Johnson front mate, i think Bent has more about him as an all round striker, and has more years ahead of him then AJ, i was thinking of more or less a straight swap, like 10 mill for AJ - 10 mill for Bent, anything beyond id leave it!

I think we will get Fernades on a year long loan with a view to a permenent, Mounthino, A def midfeilder possibly Mbia, but i would like a young centre half like Beevers or someone!

If it was a straight swap I'd agree but I can't see Spurs letting Bent go for 10 million. They are supposedly a hard club to deal with and would want around 12-14 million for him.

The thing is if we get Bent where will he fit in? Is he going to get in ahead of Cahill? I doubt he'd want to sit on the bench. Someone like AJ doesn't mind that as he proved last season. If we spend 12 million on Bent Moyes would have to play him.

I'd rather concentrate on the midfield to be honest.

I have to be critical of Moyes at this point. We shouldn't be on the verge of signing palyers in numbers.

Even not rating Carsley as quality player, at this point we don't have anyone to cover for him. If we think that Fernandes was on loan and we're still not sure wether he'll stay or not, than it was predictable that we'd be needing at least 2 players for the new season. Having Cahill injured for some matches last season, we can say that we didn't keep a single midfielder that held his place for most of the season.

Moyes has done a lot of progrssion over the last few years building the squad little by little. This year he'll have to bring more players than we're used to. And more important, he'll have to sign players to play straight away, since we didn't hold on to any midfielder.

Big sides are built with only a couple of important signings a year, I think.

You maybe right mate but it wont happen, at best i expect three permenent signings, with two or three loans. Im not one of those who belive that money is the be on and end all of progression, i have great faith in what we have, and the young players coming through. The reason we sign on average three players permenetly a season is because we make sure they are the right players, we rarely take risks, which ok might be to the detrimned of depth, but means a greater degree of on the pitch quality.

Its all well and good willing the club to bring in numbers, but there is so much to consider, their ability if foreign to adapt to the leauge/squad/way of life/country, i beleive that bringing in vast numbers can have a deremential effect on a sqaud and a team as Spurs and Newcastle will testify to. As well as that as a manager you have to think, by bringing someone in am i denying a really good young player an oppurtunity to progress by signing a player in a praticular position.

Its not as easy as jsut bringing people in.

Moutinho is so good though. He would add undoubted quality to our team. Defo the Champions League type of player Moyes is looking at.

I'm pretty sure we might not see Manny here if we get him, not that we will get Moutinho, but there is always hope.

But if we did get Moutinho and Manny, i'd have a wank trust.

I agree with you, and that's reason for my worries. We should have kept Carsley and should have done the Manny deal sooner. At this point, anyone who would come wouldn't be so risky. At least we'd have a reliable and proven solution. That wold give us more time to settle the newcomers. Even if the new addition didn't adapt right away, we'd be able to give him time.

With all of midf being newcomers, that won't happen. The pressure will be there stronger and by january we'll be talking about new signings.

I just hope Moyes gets it spot on with the new players. Because one thing I've always thought to be his handicap was the transfer market dealings.

If we get Manny we'll probably have more of a chance of getting Moutinho. They are supposedly mates. Having Valente here would also help.

At the end of the day they are different players and we need competition in midfield. I'm expecting three midfielders in to be honest.

Am expecting 3 and maybe a winger/striker.

Manny, Moutinho and M'Bia.

If we get them three I doubt we'd get any more. Maybe one or two loans. I could be wrong though.

I'd be made up with them three to be honest.

Well he wants a back up keeper.

I'm pretty sure he wants a striker too.

Could be an interesting few weeks...?

It makes me laugh that when we are linked with a quality, proven international, people are still not happy. People bang on about how we need to be looking to push ourselves into the 'sky 4' but moan when we are being linked with players who will help us do it. David Moyes is not stupid, like us he knows that we need more players in the squad. He will not blow the whole of his transfer funds on one player, its not his style. We should be ecstatic if we sign Moutinho for 18 million, as we are getting a quality player, and it will mean we have the large transfer funds we have all been craving for years.

Who's moaning?

Being realist, I wouldn't go for Moutinho.

First of all, we don't have lots of cash, so we should be buying smart.

If we only needed one or two players, I'd say go for it (Moutinho). But that's not the case.

Unfortunately we'll have to buy in numbers. 3 midf, 1 defender, 1 or 2 wingers.

That is a lot of men to be brought in.

So in terms of cost, I don't think Moutinho is what we should be looking for.
here is one

I suppose mate, the first question is do i believe Bent is a better player then AJ? I do i think he can vary his game and score different types of goals were AJ cant. I think the fact he is younger and stronger is also a big bonus for me. Would i go the extra couple of million? It would be an unpopular choice as we would also be letting AJ go but i probably would, like i say i have always been a big fan of his. For me it would be improving the overall quality of the squad, i know not everyone will agree with that but its my opinion. A lot of people would have seen him play for Charlton and thought why didnt we go in for him. Some reports suggest that a bid of 10 mill was accepted from Sunderland but Bent turned the move down as he wanted a higher profile club to make a career for himself.

About were he plays, well myself and yourself have talked about options in the sqaud and being able to vary formations/tactics from gage to game/during. I would never play him in a deep lieing second striker role like cahill, its not playing to his strengths. Hes an out and out striker and an in the box man. He is well equiped to play in a 4-4-2 or a 4-5-1. I suppose we all asume that Yaks place is a nailed on starter but not necessarily so, Yak needs compition, he has a tendency to be complacent and some what nauchalnt, frankly if Bent came in and scored more then the Yak so be it! It happened to AJ last year. I suppose the goal is to add as much quality as possible and come out with the best outcome for the team, by adding Bent i think we would be doing that keeping both he and the Yak on their toes and may the best man win. We have so many games too!

I am one of the biggest Yak supporters around mate and have been before he even came to the club. The majority this time last year on the forum were very critical about us signing him, there was a big apology thread after he came good! I was one of his staunchest supporters, and was made up when he signed. I point this out for one reason, hand on heart i think the Yak will move on in the next few years. After following his career and the man himself, i dont think hes particularly loyal to any club he plays for, i beleive his head is turned to easy and when this happens his eye goes of the ball. In many ways i would look at Bent as the natrual replacement for Yak if he is not there already. Just my opinion mind, and like i say i have always been one of his biggest fans. There is always that niggle in my mind when it comes to him.

I can't see Yakubu leaving to be honest. If we keep progressing he definatly won't. He was too good for Boro and Portsmouth which is why he moved on, it wasn't because he isn't loyal. You move on to progress and he did the right thing.

He also has Yobo, Anichebe and Pienaar. Yobo is like his brother and I've heard he's really taken to big Vic. Pienaar is also a good buddy and there all African brothers.

Bent would be an excellent signing but he'd want to start right from the start. We'd have to revert to 4-4-2 which means Cahill's future is in the balance. He's perfectly capable of playing centre midfield but he'd wouldn't be our best option there. Cahill seems to have an effect on the team aswell which would probably give him the nod.

I just don't think Bent would be willing to sit on the bench whereas someone like AJ would as proved last season. I'd rather strengthen the midfield and count on Vaughan and Johnson to backup Yakubu and Cahill. I've got a feeling this could be Vaughan season personally.
