Moyes gives it straight - we can't compete with the big spenders

The Esk

Player Valuation: £70m
from the OS:

"I think there has been some irresponsible buying and spending by some (premiership) clubs and it makes it a bit more difficult if you've got less money to spend than that."

He added: "We'd like to add to the squad and I know the supporters are desperate to see new faces coming in, no more so than me, but things out there in the market are tight.

"But we are certainly doing everything we can to strengthen the squad and give ourselves a chance. We've done it that way for the past few years and we'll continue to do so.

"I've been a supporter, in fact I still am a supporter, but we're always quite cagey here and we don't give too much away partly because people know that we don't have the funds to compete at the top end."

Nothing new in the sense that we already know there's little cash - is he just being the canny buyer or preparing the ground for no more deals?

Dunno about the canny buyer thing mate, but I do agree that maybe he is just building us up for the disappointment that the big name signings or maybe even a few lesser name signings may not materialise.

No but he should be signing at least 4 players.

He has to learn from his mistakes.

We have added a quality utility player to our ranks, and Cahill is back - I think Moyes is happy with last season (as I think are most Evertonians) and is seeing no reason why this team cannot repeat last seasons success, especially with the development of Vaugan up front.

And obviously we need to strengthen in certain areas, but this won't be by spending what money we have just for the sake of it, on players he doesn't think worthy.

A couple more quality players wouldn't go a miss, but I expect us to beat all these teams spending £5m on the likes of Koumas, without any more additions to our squad.

Riquelme and Fernandes if any please!!

The thing that is worrying me most of all is the importance of 'bedding' players in.Pompey, Spurs, Mancs, Newcastle and even Fulham FFS have all bout early and given the lads they have bought ample time to get used to their surroundings and fellow team mates.

We need additions at least another two in my mind, and if we dont sign any of them soon we could be caught with players that maybe are out of shape or take longer to settle. I really hope we do our signings asap to give us the best chance in what I believe will be the fiercest premiership to date.

The mistake was TO SIGN 4 PLAYERS.

He has learnt.

Yup, why spend money just to sign anyone players to make up numbers. Better to use what you have and save for decent acquisitions.

kilbane was a deadline day success.

players will be in their respective preseasons where ever, so fitness shouldnt be all too much of an issue, and if we only get one or two new first teamers, then its no big for the squad to accomodate them. if we were recruiting 4 or 5 new starting 11 players, then settling in and learning each others game would be a lot more of an issue.

Er, Kilbane, success... thats debatable.

I think its clear players respond better in the season if they get a good pre-season done with their clubs, we're the proof of that. Whoever we sign now is not going to get the full preparation of say what Jagielka has received.

To be honest suits we need players that are either 1st team ready or there abouts- competition for places is so important- it keeps players on their toes and keeps everyone at top condition. The players we should be looking at are your Fernandes's, Gamst's etc to raise the standard again.

its a case of cash though mick, i think its possible that moyes might make another johnson sized signing, but we are hearing nothing because it would put the cat amongst the pidgeons - and when unscrupulous agents sense a quick buck (greed remember) they try to engineer an auction.

so far we have spent 4 million big ones, i have no fears that this will be all we spend this summer, if we did only buy jags then would this be our lowest spending summer since the premiership began?.

kilbane did us proud for the type of player he is, he was never going to be ryan giggs, but he gave his all and we moved him on at a profit - that makes him a success in my book.

signing the likes of gamst or fernandes would be a step up, have we been priced out of getting either or is moyes waiting on someone or something else?

i have hundreds of questions, and the only question i get back from the club is 'can my patience take it?'

Assuming the first eleven looks something like Howard; Neville/Jagielka, Yobo, Lescott, Valente; Neville/Jagielka, Cahill, Arteta, VDM/Osman/AN Other; Johnson, Vaughan/Anichebe/Beattie

Are we looking to strengthen that first 11 or add squad players?

[Poor language removed], when you break it down like that, it really is much more palatable. I think Richardson from the manure could be a good signing. Gives him regular footy and it gives us someone who is naturally left-footed, fast and has a good cross and isn't afraid to have a go to go past someone.

Like I have said elsewhere. Look for some major players AFTER January when we can reassess how many competitions we are still in and how many players we need (due to injuries, games left etc). Till then. get the left sorted and I will be a happy bunny.
