Felt he looked more assured than Barry before being withdrawn.
I do seem to question the choice of substitutions RM makes as more often than not he makes the negative ones.

Unlucky Everton that... :-( I feel sorry the most for Robles and McGeady is actually a tit. But apart from most of You I understand Mo's substitution. If You recall during the first few games he played much deeper, stepped back for the CBs when they went forward. In the last 3-4 games he plays in a more forward role: as I see they don't play in line with Barry, he's used as some kind DM + play switching CM. Obviuosly because Barkley is not enough for that role (sadly, I heard so much of him before and a is a bit of disappointment for me so far). He's developing to this role quickly (sometimes makes mistakes in defending because of the attacking role, but with his pace he mostly covers back) but it was exactly Mirallas who was needed there yesterday with all his experience. I really liked Mo's long balls yesterday and his pressing and man chasing, but subbing him for Kev was the right thing to do. And I'm really curious right now that if McCarthy will be fully healthy for Monday who will sit on the bench. I think Martinez wants to continue this formation : in this case it should be Barry who rests and McCarthy in the deeper role.

If Barry go on bench I would believe there is no special relationship with him and Martinez. But he play every [Poor language removed] minute from Boxing day until now. For 33 year old player that is just calling for drop in performance and hes good on some things still even do hes slow like no other player i saw on PL playing in midfield . But to play this many games every minute in such small window it' s nuts. Yaya is rested , far superior player then Barry. I just think that we need energy , speed , agility and Barry will not get us there. But far from it that Barry was our problem last night . Naismith awful , Barkley nothing, Baines ( did not notice him until second half) ,Mcgeady is traying but crush confidence and lack in quality , should never start before Mirallas . Besic look secure , good in passing , pick wingers and strikers out , connecting line all over the pitch , and until 67 minute when he leave game with player who did nothing he was best after Robles . Yet not good enough to stay in play .And Lukaku was not good like two games before , he should score at list one more and e need to work on hes offside's. So Europa League and PL. We lost hunt for CL we should know that and when we secure PL we need to start prepare team for next season ,some players need to go and some holes to close up. Almost forget , Stones awful game and i was please when i saw him starting.

.....I think we've touched on this that Barry has a very specialist, disciplined role in front of the back four and providing cover for Baines. I reckon that's why he doesn't take him off. Gibson did it well and Besic might well be do it in the future.

Why oh why was he subbed and not Barry, never understand.
Because Barry was the better long term gamble for the game.
I'm sure Bobby, like the rest of us was terrified Besic would get sent off and make things worse(even though Barry gets more cards), but the big thing was Barry's passing.
Because Barry has a better range of passing and a bit more vision, he was pinging balls up the pitch constantly with pretty good accuracy (considering the last few months) which to some extent bypassed the overloaded midfield and went some way to negating the man deficit.

to put it bluntly, Booby switched tactics when down to 10 men, went longer, more direct, and Barry's passing was more effective than McGeady (who I actually thought played well).

Nothing wrong with Besic passing or long range, see a couple of crackers last night including a reverse play over the defence, not his fault lukaku kept going too early and getting caught offside

Yap until 67 min. all good pass come from Besic not Barry. It s at the end about how the [Poor language removed] 33 year old can play all this games every minute of it and in last 6 ,4 he was absolute crap? No argument that leaving Besic would not be better move last night at all.

Think, Besic was replaced because he neutralized Song and once Song was subbed out and McGeady got red carded there was less need for him. I think the tactic switch had the desired effect. We did alright with 10 men, which is an additional reason why I am gutted about the loss.

Think Barry is the more disciplined out of the two, and plays the deeper role more effectively. Also good to have an experienced head out there when chasing the game imo

This is spot on.

Besic is a brilliant player, no doubt about it. But ten against eleven, you need some experience in the middle of the pitch, and to be fair to Barry he was horrible going forward, but did well defensively.

Barry over Besic?

haha im sure we had one 'fernando torres , caraghers bit on the side'

to this tune remember it cant remember if it was used often though

Several versions, my personal fav being:

His Mama says he isn't gay Torres! Torres!
He just likes his hair that way Torres! Torres!
When he scores he jumps with joy
He's a little ladyboy
Carraghers bit on the side.

Oh how we laughed.
