....the Barry position is quite a specialist role requiring real discipline regarding positioning. It would be great to see Besic develop that speciality and become our very own Makelele.
Should be McCarthy taking it tbh, especially if we plan to keep hold of Barkley. Obviously if Besic could play there and do well it'd be mint.

This question confuses me a lot to be honest. Absolutely no clue what our long term midfield is meant to look like. Besic, McCarthy, Barkley and this new number 10 are, you'd have thought, expected to be in the long-term starting XI. How on earth is that meant to work though?

Edit: maybe even add Cleverley in there but I think he'll be playing on the left personally.

I disagree, they are both naturally defensive, but from what ive seen, Besic is more technical in the final 3rd.

...I think McCarthy has another dimension to his game that needs to be encouraged. The pass with the outside of his foot to set up Lukaku (v QPR?) was top drawer and he has started hitting the box. I just think McCarthy has a real energy, the Barry role is much more restrictive, remember Carsley played it week in week out because it requires discipline more than energy.

I know its a dream, but I would prefer a return to the old fashioned midfield, 2 "holding" 1 goes, the other stays and vice versa.

....I often think of the mid 80s side and feel that isn't a bad baseline model to replicate. Reid and Bracewell hunted in a pair, neither particularly hit the box but we got goals from wide. That side had a real balance. Sometimes things get too complicated but I do like a proper defensive midfielder in the Makelele mode.

Well it certainly helps with the 2 fullbacks we have.
