No....it ws just that for some strange reason the perception of Darren Fletcher changed.

He was still crap but the press told people he had become "excellent".

The same thing happened with Owen Hargreaves.

He was generally scorned and derided then had one good half of a game for England in the 2006 World Cup and his status was upgraded from crap to excellent.

When the reality was he was still crap.

Hargreaves was class, just the ignorant England fan perspecitive was wrong until 2006

Nearly sure it was SAF who told everyone how good a player he had become.

And made him a first-choice selection as a consequence.

Ok, here goes.

No pace
Crap ball control
Pushed off the ball too easily
Can't pick even a simple five yard pass
Can't shoot from anywhere further out than 4 yards
Poor positional sense
Doesn't offer any outlet to his full back
I know I've said it already but he's REALLY f*cking slow

Now, if anyone would like to retort and list me some of his positives, I'm all ears. However, the phrases "good squad player" "played out of position" and "serious injury" will result in being swiftly added to my ignore list (Hi dixie7 x)

Nope.

It was a year after that World Cup that Ferguson fetched him to Old Trafford.

The press had elevated his status before his time at OT......where between injuries and all round crapness, I don't think he ever became a first choice selection in United's midfield.

But whether he did or he didn't, he was never very good.

And being a first choice for Ferguson isn't always proof that a player is other than ordinary.

As any United fan will tell you about Veron, Djemba-Djemba or Wes Brown among others.

That said, is there really such a thing as a "first choice selection" at United?

Seems to me no player is ever certain to play from one week to the next, no matter how big his reputation.

He was distictly average when he first went to Utd and was criticised by their fans. He then improved, became a very good player and merited his place in their team.

Comparing Veron with Djemba-Djemba is laughable. Just because it didn't work out for him at Utd doesn't mean he wasn't a top class player. He was.

But it was all in the press' imagination of course.

Spot on....

Djemba Djemba was boss.
