2022/23 Nathan Patterson

I don’t think it’s dyche being hung up on experience, I’d guess it’s more likely that he doesn’t believe Patterson is capable of following his instructions. I said the same last year, I know an ex Everton player who always said the one thing moyes valued above anything else was trusting that you could be trusted to do the job you were given. Lampard didn’t put Patterson in last season and now dyche isn’t either. The logical conclusion is that they’re not confident he can do the job, but I see we’re determined to make out like they’ve decided to leave out prime Cafu instead.
Not really. More that your logic (or Dyche’s) would require he’s picking players instead of Paterson that are capable of following instructions.

When he’s picking players out of position, who have proven time and again, they aren’t good enough (even in their favourite position) and they then play badly, the logic goes out the window. It’s not about thinking Paterson is prime Cafu. He’s a right back and he’s not Godfrey or Holgate - that should have him in the team. It’s up to Dyche but if Godfrey and Holgate play and look poor, then his decisions are questionable.

But Patterson has played poorly too? He was poor in the Fulham game after he came on, he was dreadful in some games around the turn of the year. They’re all much of a muchness is the point, pretending Patterson is clearly superior is fine but it’ll likely be proven wrong within a couple of games of coming in again. That’s not a criticism of him, it’s just an assessment of where we’re at. None of them are that good, just because you haven’t seen one player fail as much doesn’t make them better, obviously.

I agree with the reasoning behind why Patterson may not be selected, yet I'd argue that we can't and should have relied on Godfrey and Holgate there either.

From my point of view, I suspect it's a mixture of wanting experience, strength and reliability to shore up the defence - he's not been keen on him or Mykolenko.

The issue is that the players he has put into that position appear to lack the adaptability, ability and temperament to play there either, which limits us too.

Right now, our full backs offer very little offer offensively, while being schooled defensively. It ain't good.

Patterson got his injury at a bad time, and in my opinion the lad seems to have packed on a bit of timber might be totally wrong in saying that. We can't start him If he isn't at full tilt. Starting Holgate/Godfrey when both are disasters tells me Dyche doesn't think he's ready for a 90.

Don’t think I said most or any of that…

Obviously and if you think they’re all
Much if a muchness, then you agree Dyche’s logic is flawed. It only works if you accept Godfrey and Holgate are better options than Paterson.

I think you’re misunderstanding the point or just desperate to argue and so ignoring the fact that I’m broadly agreeing with you.

My point was just that I think (note it’s just a guess) that dyche may not believe Patterson is capable of doing the job he wants him to do. It’s not necessarily his age or experience or whatever, but what he shows in training.

I would have picked Patterson in the last couple of games, I can’t be any clearer on that really. That’s not because I think he’s infinitely better than the others though, so I can’t get too bent out of shape about it not happening because I’m not overly convinced it would actually make any difference.

Agree and all I was saying is that doesn’t fly when the players you pick instead aren’t capable of doing the job he wants them to do either.

Yeah but Patterson hasn’t played many minutes under Dyche, Godfrey has, and has been poor. Patterson should be given a chance under Dyche before we can say he’s been as bad as the others.

I think it’s clear Dyche doesn’t fancy him.

He was crap before the injury and surprise surprise he is crap after the injury and even bigger surprise Dyche wont play him anymore. If Holgate gets a game instead of you, you should think about a new profession!
