2022/23 Nathan Patterson

I was very skeptical of Patterson based on what we saw last year pre-injury and in preseason this year, but the last couple games have shown something. Hope he can string some more good performances together.

There was something up last season regarding how little time Patterson got

Whether it was regards to payments due if he were played at that point in time or perhaps some promises had been made to Seamus Coleman in relation to game time

Perhaps it was just that they didn't want to put masses of pressure on him with relegation potentially looming

He's also clearly been told to focus more of defending at Everton than he ever did at Rangers or does for Scotland

The first few games this season he seemed frightened to put a foot wrong and was getting a LOT of on field instruction from the other more experienced defenders

Now that he's getting some more confidence and seems to be getting less stick he's really coming into his own

That's really great to see as an Everton and Scotland fan

That total of 45 minutes in 1 appearance on his debut for the club you mean? In what was largely our second string team. Not sure what you were really expecting from him.

I would suggest it's because we were in a relegation scrap and the club captain was an experienced right back with very few leaders elsewhere on the pitch. Patterson was also injured for several months.

Nothing strange about his lack of minutes then. Now that relegation isn't looming, he has been given time, even though Coleman is back.

I think Lampard was looking for experience during the relegation fight. And you’ve got to say he was correct. Everton stayed up. Experience was also the reason he never got as much playing time with Rangers. During Gerrards time at Rangers, Celtics were going for 7,8 and eventually 9 in a row with regard to league titles. It’s very difficult for a youngster to break into the 1st team at the Old Firm under normal circumstances but during those particular seasons the manager was always going to go with experience.

Wasn't he injured? Haha.

It took Andy Robertson 5 months to be considered for the 1st team over the road , its sensible to get these younger lads bedded in til they know what's required.

His injury set him back also.

Yeah looking at it that way it's probably to be expected given especially given the circumstances

There were certainly a lot of questions being asked on this thread during that time (leading up to the injury) that were asking a lot of questions as to why he wasn't getting any game time however

Looking at how he's performing now after such a short time it's possible they were warranted

It's also possible that this has been the better route

The only possible reason for doubt about Patterson last season was defensively. Even last season imo he was already outperforming Robertson as an attacking full back for Scotland. There has been no substantial attacking improvement from him this season. He was always absolutely top drawer in the opposition half.

Aye there's been talk of him focussing more on defensive duties given that there's not been much in the way of attackers to ping the ball into

It'll be interesting to see what happens with his style of play once DCL is back

Maybe Frank will try and progress that side of his game for Everton
