2024/25 Nathan Patterson

His biggest issue has been injury issues. How much of that is down to inactivity? Not playing and then getting the odd few minutes here and there. He was clearly one of Scotland’s bigger talents at a young age and impressed in Scotland. Has bags of energy, gets up and down the pitch and can cross a football. He can definitely contribute further up the pitch. IF and when he’s fit, he should be playing it’s as simple as that. He’s the best option we currently have and his energy and youthful legs would be an asset to the team.

We all know by now though that his face doesn’t fit so he’ll forever be reduced to a bit part player under the current manager. “Youngy” will start at right back on Saturday and we all know it.

His biggest issue is being unfit and slightly overweight which probably contributes to his injury issues. That and not being tactically disciplined. Sort both out and we've got a potentially decent squad player in the ranks.

Fitness for me is the issue. If Dyche insists on Harrison as rw come what may, tactical discipline is less of any issue.

Jep, I see potential in him especially going forward, and he's in age still to learn and with Coleman and Young there are 2 good mentors that can give him a lot for the future.

Young deserves his starting spot this year, he's one of the best outfield players this season. It would definitely be good to have one position less to worry about.

Because there will be a lot work to be done on the transfer market and we have enough sorrows.

It'd be just typical if he turned back up at FF injured or unfit after his New Year's celebrations when there's rumours of a loan back to Rangers. The fella needs a bit of luck and if the opportunity is there to go back up North that'd be a good chance to kick start his career. The fans still remember him up there and I'm sure he'd be a welcome addition with the season they're having.

I often see this accusation levelled at Dyche but heatmaps tend to show that Mykolenko does get forward. He spent way more time up the pitch than either of Forest's fullbacks and it's a recurring theme. The difference was that when they did get forward the Forest fullbacks did something with the ball.

Here's two heatmaps. The left one is Aina who was at RB up against Mykolenko and the right one is Mykolenko. Arrows at the top indicate direction of attacking play.

Which one is getting forward there and which one is acting like a 'wide centre back'? Mykolenko is given full license to get forward but does absolutely nothing with it.

As for Patterson he definitely got forward more than Young but both of them got forward a lot more than the Forest player at LB they were up against. Not got Pattersons but here is Young (right) and Nico Williams (left) who he was up against on the flank.

That's not to defend Dyche to the hilt or anything like that as there are plenty of choices he makes which I don't agree with but some of the attacks on here about what he does or doesn't do are often based entirely on tropes rather than actual facts.
Wouldn’t read to much into Forest game in terms of comparison. They came to sit deep and hit us on the break so don’t think their heat maps are unexpected. Don’t think he or Myko have a clue what to do when a team cedes the pitch to us.

Dyche has given detailed analysis of his approach to football, including what he wants from his fullbacks. He doesn’t want attacking fullbacks, he doesn’t want them overlapping and getting ahead of the ball. He wants his team to stay in defensive shape in case they lose the ball and are hit on transition.

Checking against similar sides in and around the mid-table or lower end it's a similar tale in terms of whether our fullbacks get up there or not. My point was that the accusation of the fullbacks being instructed not to attack or get forward doesn't really stand up to any real scrutiny.

Chelsea and Man City are the two games where there hasn't been a lot of time in the attacking third but that's a similar tale for most sides against such possession heavy sides. They certainly didn't play as wide centre halves though. Even against Arsenal the fullbacks got forward pretty frequently.

There's certainly nothing to suggest that Patterson doesn't get games because he refuses to play Dycheball staying back at all times and acting as a wide centre-half.

I’m not really interested in other teams. I watch Everton every week. If you’ve watched our games, listened to him talking about the game and concluded he values and or prioritises attacking attributes in a fullback or as part of his attacking ‘game plan’ you’re entitled to your opinion. You’re watching something very different to me though.

You don't need to have an interest in other teams but it's a useful measuring stick to see what Everton's players do different to the norm.

It helps 'conclude' that the claim Everton's full backs don't get forward and instead play as wide centre-halves is an inaccurate claim. At no point have I concluded he 'prioritises' attacking attributes in a fullback.

You watch the game every week and and there are plenty of actual facts you could point out so why build an argument on stuff that isn't actually true?

Sorry, fact: dycheball famous for his use of attacking, overlapping fullbacks 👍🏻

He has a reputation of hitting the ale too.

I remember he was done a couple of times at rangers during Covid.
