2024/25 Nathan Patterson

Depends on new manager’s style, you’d like to think he’d ask a bit more from his fullbacks than Dyche does.
To be fair he can’t really ask who he currently has to do more. Young, Coleman don’t have the legs and as we’ve seen Coleman and Young will do it but can’t do it for 90 minutes Mykolenko isn’t good enough to do it and Patterson hasn’t been fit or given a chance to do it. Out of them all Patterson probably is the one who will do it but obviously isn’t in Dyches plans plus he does seem to prefer narrow defensive FB over more ball playing attacking ones but again no surprise with the personnel. A Robinson or ait nouri would definitely get on the front foot regardless of instructions and is something we definitely need.

I think a lot of managers would have tried him as a right midfielder before now. He's decent at the little scrambles our players in that position have to deal with, and he makes more dangerous runs into the box than any of the other options we have. It'd be worth a go, I reckon.

This was brought up a few months ago or perhaps even at the start of the season. A question was put to Dyche regarding who could be used at RM (if i rememner correctly) and for Patterson he said that he doesnt see him there, only at RB.

His biggest issue has been injury issues. How much of that is down to inactivity? Not playing and then getting the odd few minutes here and there. He was clearly one of Scotland’s bigger talents at a young age and impressed in Scotland. Has bags of energy, gets up and down the pitch and can cross a football. He can definitely contribute further up the pitch. IF and when he’s fit, he should be playing it’s as simple as that. He’s the best option we currently have and his energy and youthful legs would be an asset to the team.

We all know by now though that his face doesn’t fit so he’ll forever be reduced to a bit part player under the current manager. “Youngy” will start at right back on Saturday and we all know it.

Another quick point on Patterson. I’ve seen an overwhelming desire both on here and on social media for the club to sign a starting right back. With PSR still an issue and funds still tight in the short to medium term, rather than spend what little we have on a right back, I’d rather see what Patterson can do under a new manager and use the funds to sign an attacking player or two. If you can pick up a bargain (Lamptey out of contract in the summer) then fine bring them in. Release Young in the summer and have Lamptey and Patterson competing for the right back spot. That can improve our options there with little outlay. If Brighton don’t play ball this month, we should be speaking to Lamptey’s agent and doing a deal to get him on a free in the summer. Use any funds elsewhere.

Ha Ha Ha.

Patterson's stock is sky high after a 20 minute appearance when he did nothing of note other than jog back into position behind Elanga's break after he'd got caught out of position - an error that should be called 'doing a Patterson' it's so synonymous with him.

The 'new manager' though will apparently see the fantastic skill set ignored by Dyche and wasted...even though every other Everton manager has been - to say the least - reluctant to play him.

He's a basket case of a player; he cant fit into any system tried or position tried and he's like having 10 men on the pitch.

Those who want him starting are - surprise surprise - Dyche haters and will grab just about anything off the floor to throw at him...even a failed player.

Ludicrous.

Get him sold back to the Irn Bru league and let's get a functioning RB in this month.

New Year... same old 💩!

I think a manager like Bobby Brown shoes would have played Patterson and given him encouragement to develop. Flip side couldn’t see Bobby giving Myko 100 odd prem league games.

Just been unlucky that Dyche is essentially looking for a wide centre back in his fullbacks and doesn’t want fancy dans who overlap, play give and goes, try to put crosses in from advanced positions. Myko has benefited from Dyche and what he looks for in a fullback, Patterson hasn’t.

I often see this accusation levelled at Dyche but heatmaps tend to show that Mykolenko does get forward. He spent way more time up the pitch than either of Forest's fullbacks and it's a recurring theme. The difference was that when they did get forward the Forest fullbacks did something with the ball.

Here's two heatmaps. The left one is Aina who was at RB up against Mykolenko and the right one is Mykolenko. Arrows at the top indicate direction of attacking play.

Which one is getting forward there and which one is acting like a 'wide centre back'? Mykolenko is given full license to get forward but does absolutely nothing with it.

As for Patterson he definitely got forward more than Young but both of them got forward a lot more than the Forest player at LB they were up against. Not got Pattersons but here is Young (right) and Nico Williams (left) who he was up against on the flank.

That's not to defend Dyche to the hilt or anything like that as there are plenty of choices he makes which I don't agree with but some of the attacks on here about what he does or doesn't do are often based entirely on tropes rather than actual facts.

One thing he did do several times was give and go plus actually made a run into the box when he drove a low ball in.

Can't remember the last time I seen 2 Everton players do a give and go, maybe Mcneil and Iwobi against Palace
Yes mate it was good to see.
For the give and go,
Seamus and Ashley are not fast enough and Myko is either not intelligent enough, too shitey feared or just not good enough.
