It overtook cricket a while back i believe. Cricket is very strong in specific countries, but there aren't many of them... its popularity is propped up by how big it is in India.

In the UK it's the 4th most popular sport in terms of participation, ahead of cricket and not that far behind rugby union. It's also the 2nd most popular sport (again in terms of participation) with kids/teenagers.

Cricket stars are only famous in cricket countries, NBA stars are famous everywhere.

Overtook Cricket in what way?

In terms of worldwide popularity, it's the fastest growing sport in the world and has been for several years now, including huge growth in China and India.

I guess the question is what defines 'worldwide popularity'. If people participating in a sport was the only criteria badminton would be one of the biggest sports in the world but it isn't because it gets no media coverage and no one cares about it on a professional level.

Something like this will break down the arguement for why it's now the second biggest sport better than i can

Nobody is really arsed, Longo.

I'm gonna be a douche over this. Kobe was my idol as a kid. I modeled how I played sports and somewhat life after him. Still to this day, at work, I pretty much run the business I work at but I always try to out work everyone. Even if I'm putting in double the hours, while you're there I'm gonna work like I just got back from a vacation.

My one uncle who I played pick up basketball with in the city always called me Kobe. And still does to this day.

I used to play kids who made these "all-star" teams and mark them out the game. Not only that, I'd do back heel nutmegs and foolish stuff just to let let them know, I'm better than you.

First day in college we did a 5v5 drill, and it was man. You could only steal the ball from the guy you covered. I went after the best player who ended up playing in the mls but was by far our most talented player.

That was because of growing up idolizing Kobe. I know the sentimental [Poor language removed] is lame. I feel selfish because he was a human with so many closer ties and so many others go through so much worse.

I didn't know him but he's a big part of who I am. Thanks if you made it through all of this, and I just been telling people all day. I'm just grateful for what the dude gave to me.
he gave you one hell of an imagination by the looks of it you utter weirdo

Cricket and rugby, both utterly boring sports only relevant in the Empire. Now that Harry and Meg have Brexited, get back on topic and discuss interesting sports like basketball or I'm dialing up thread police.

That Washington Post just has the headline " How Basketball became the worlds second biggest sport " and then nothing to back that statement up.

The other one uses 13 factors like commercial deals and players wages, strange way to measure how popular a sport is.

Well what factors would you use to define how popular a sport is ?

Id use a combination of participation, viewing figures, attendance, revenue, media presence etc.

I'll admit it's not something that can be easily measured but i think it's a fair assessment to say it's the second biggest sport in the world, open to hearing why it's not though.
