SerenityNigh's needless post-All-Star-break power rankings and odds to win the NBA Finals
All rankings include Ring Factor (have you been here before?), HOF Factor (you need HOF players to win, even if they're Father Time old), and Tangible Factor (like intangibles, but more relevant)
Not making the cut: OKC, I don't believe in them
11. 76ers
These really shouldn't make the cut either, but I would rather show how disappointing they've been, because these were pre-season darlings. Instead, they're 9-21 on the road this season, not to mention they're injured. These are a 90% lock to get bounced in the first round.
RF: 0
HF: 3, This roster is talented, and I really like guys like Thybulle, although he'll never get in except as part of a winning team, but Simmons, Embiid, and Horford all look like HOF guys to me.
TF: 9-21 on the road, what a bunch of losers.
Ring %: 1
10. Mavs
The Mavs are exciting but not yet ready. They could easily win a series and build some necessary experience, and if you like them you should be excited about next year, but they really have no chance to win this year.
RF: 0
HF: 1, Porzingis should develop into a HOF player but he's got to stay healthy. Luka is a monster though.
TF: 20-9 on the road, which is better than at home. These look like good money to upset someone if they get the right matchup, but they can't go more than 1 round, can they?
Ring %: 2
9. Jazz
This team looks good on paper, bad on the court. Quinn Snyder makes me feel like I need a smoke when I look at him. They should be good, and maybe they'll figure something out when the time comes, but I think they're built wrong. I can't see them getting past the 2nd round, and with the wrong matchup in round 1 they'll get bounced in 5.
RF: 0
HF: 2, Conley probably isn't a HOF guy but you have to think Mitchell and Gobert are. 2 HOF is generally the baseline to challenge for a title, but even still this team isn't ready.
TF: They traded for Conley and can't figure out how to use him still.
Ring %: 2
8. Nuggets
They are as deep as you can get it seems, but they give too many minutes to too many players. The bench shortens and superstars emerge in the postseason, and I'm not sure who on this team will emerge to get what they need. I can see them going deep in the playoffs--they should--but I don't see them as a real threat to win.
RF: 0
HF: 1, Is it just Jokic who's elite? I don't know that anyone else is next level, and although Millsap had a great career, he's probably not HOF either (not to mention he's out of the rotation).
TF: This team is really, deep, which normally is a good thing, but I can't make that work in their favor.
Ring % 3
7. Rockets
They've doubled down on small ball wonkish play style, and it will win them most games but I don't know whether this will last in the playoffs. How many nerds have won the NBA Finals before anyway? Some will say that both GSW and Miami Heat both won with small ball teams, but both of these also played big men when it counted. Plus, GSW has Draymond, and Robert Covington isn't Draymond. These Rockets will destroy some teams then lose in heartbreaking fashion when it counts.
RF: 0, although if I could go -1 I might put that here
HF: 2, and a solid 2 with Westbrook and Harden
TF: 0-27 from 3-point range, just 2 years ago, in game 7. Daryl Morey is probably also a gambling addict.
Ring %: 5
6. Heat
I really like this Heat team and think they're seriously underestimated, but even then I don't know how good they are nor how good they can be. But their road record is not good, which is not a good sign. Maybe that will improve over the last few weeks.
RF: 1, it's nice to have a guy like Iguodala on your side
HF: 2, I like Bam Adebayo as a young modern 5, and Iguodala should get in for winning and career numbers, but I'm only giving them 1/2 each. Plus Jimmy Butler, he's ok at basketball.
TF: If they don't implode, they'll be a tough grind for any and every team they face. They should reach round 2 and could be a challenge in the East Finals if they make it.
Ring %: 5
