2022/23 Neal Maupay

McNeil has improved, fair play. Maupay is not going to improve. Brighton got rid of him because he wasn’t good enough for them. If he scores 6 next season for us (more chance of me shatting a potato out of my arse) then it doesn’t mean he’s good enough for us either.

Well, another way to look at it is Brighton signed him for a big fee, because... well he was scoring 25+ goals for a midtable Championship side in Brentford who have a decent eye for a striker like Toney/Watkins.

Brighton head coach Graham Potter said: "Neal is a talented striker, with good strength and pace, and he is a goalscorer. He will add an extra dimension to our existing forward options, and we are delighted to have completed the transfer. The club has been monitoring Neal and has been aware of his ability for some time. Separately I was also aware of his obvious ability at Swansea, and came up against him in the Championship last season. His record in the Championship has been exceptional, with 41 goals across the last two seasons, and now his challenge is to transfer that to the Premier League."

It become evident he was seeing his contract out and Brighton being a well ran club lately began to transition away from him - Potter clearly rated him though because they wouldn't sell him when we bid for him a year before.

My point is, you get fans desperate to stick the knife in and going over the top saying stuff like;

I’m not convinced he’d be effective at any level of professional football, he doesn’t have one attribute to speak of.

^ When it's nonsense. Football exists outside of Everton last season.

Still, all this;

- Brighton wanted to keep him. He wouldn't renew. He's been an important player for them and still would be if he wanted to stay.
- He's only available, and for a good price because he's in the last year of his deal. From January, he can open talks with any foreign club about a free transfer.
- League goals - 10 in 37, 8 in 33, 8 in 35. Their top goal scorer in those 3 seasons. Over those 3 years, he's contributed a third of their goals.
- Compare how he'd rank at 10, 8 and 8 in an Everton team the past 3 years.
- He's 25, he hit double figures (ok, 10 league goals) in his debut season as a 21/22 year old for Brighton.
- It sounds daft, but he tends to score goals that matter. It's not like he slots 3 in a 4-0 win to bump up his numbers - 'Take away the nine he netted in 2021-22 and Brighton’s record-breaking ninth place finish becomes 14th spot in the table. Maupay was single-handedly worth seven points last season.'
- He has a very good fitness record.
- People like to say 'Brighton create loads of chances, Maupay misses loads' - he has a better conversion rate than most, including Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.
- He's low risk in that he's 'proven' in the Prem, young enough to do a few years and sell for profit.
- Playing style. He's a bit street footballer - he brings energy, tenacity and some snide. He's a bit of an angry ant - he can't play upfront on his tod, but he creates space for those around him. Evertonians tend to like that type of player.
- Long term target so it's not a knee jerk panic - we were linked last summer but had no chance because Brighton wouldn't sell;

Search your posts in McNeil's thread and you'll be saying he's woeful, never a premier league player nevermind a championship player and god knows what else. Maybe try and not be so condemning and conclusive - it's also rarely as simple as just a player being terrible.

The last 3/4 years Everton haven't complimented or helped any player - not one I can think of who I think Everton have complimented/supported. Little wonder we have the likes of Elanga swerving us for Nottingham Forest.

We need to stop setting players up to fail by signing players for strengths and then asking them to do the opposite.

I thought he would be better than he has been. I thought he was a 5-7 a year player

Some of the chances he misses are just abysmal though. It's nothing to do with systems or how he's used.

Alarm bells were ringing when he had the entire goal to aim at and poked it straight at Alisson’s gut in like his second game. That wasn’t anything to do with the system either.

I’ve still yet to hear anyone tell me what system he would actually be good in and what qualities he would bring to that system. Just that we’re “not using him right”. Ok how do we use him then? Brighton’s system apparently was set up perfectly for him and he was the reason they finished 16th despite creating more chances than most of the league.

Any potential buyers, after watching his 'performance' v Wigan yesterday, will have walked away quickly.

We are stuck with him, stinking the place out all season.

Must admit, I don't bother watching pre-season games.

Because you know, pre-season.

Did Dyche even watch that one? Saw a tweet saying he was watching the Everton 11 vs Tranmere instead.

Missing clear cut chances on a consistent basis is definitely an issue

I think he had the worst ratio for missing big chances in the PL last season with only 1 goal from about 8 or 9 chances

See, before Everton he had a better conversion rate than both Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.

Strange how he's gone to pot since rocking up at Everton.

I am happy to blame the club for a whole multitude of issues, but I'm not sure how it's the clubs fault for a centre forward missing clear chances time and time again.

The biggest issue is recruitment of course. He's nothing like DCL and we need a good centre forward to hold the ball, for the team to be effective.
