2022/23 Neal Maupay

He’s a second striker who’s entire game is about linking play and getting into the box late whilst a main striker distracts defenders as he used to do at Brighton.

Perhaps that was Lampard’s thinking on paper setting up as 352 with Maupay behind DCL. Once the injury to DCL occurred that was out of the window and we then asked Maupay to lead the line which just isn’t his game.

We can all call him crap as many times as we want, he’s slotted in the prem for this forum’s favourite team numerous times and was highly rated by this forum’s previous favourite manager. If Dyche wants to play with Doucoure, Iwobi or Dele off the central striker in a 451 then we’d be best letting him leave for a club who’ll make better use of him.

I'll say it again - if we signed the championship player of the season, a 21 year old striker who'd just scored 25 league goals we'd all be over the moon;

Neal Maupay, who was crowned the Supporters’ Player of the Year for 2018/19, scored 28 goals this season with his 25 Sky Bet Championship goals the most by a Brentford player in a league season since Steve Phillips struck 32 in 1977/78. It’s also the most goals by a player in a league season in the top two tiers since 1937/38. Neal played 49 games in all competitions this season to get his 28 goals, his 25 league goals - the second most in the division - came in 43 games.

He's not suited to Everton, he's not a number 9 - but the problem is deeper and more complex than "he can't finish/he's crap"

Its really similar to McNeil - the usual suspects were on his case when others were saying he's 21, being asked to do a job he hadn't done before/out of position in a basketcase Everton team.

Absolutely nailed it.

He doesn’t link play either. He comes deep and just pops it straight back to the centre halves. I’ve never seen him help us progress up the pitch once.

Brighton weren’t this forum’s favourite team when he played for them funnily enough, they were just another bottom half team. Oh look, they binned him off and have instantly shot up the league.

To link play as a second striker you need, well... an actual striker.

You don’t though do you? Firmino is a link player who used to drop deep like Maupay and he didn’t have a big target man ahead of him. In fact who did Maupay have ahead of him at Brighton? I’m pretty sure he was their centre forward and flanked by Trossard/March/Gross in a 4-3-3.

Formino also had salad and mane to link up with, all due respect to mcneal I don't think they're quite the same calibre (yet)

And that’s fair enough, however I cannot understand how any striker or forward of any description cannot kick a ball into a net without skying it or directly at the keeper with almost no pace, and if he can’t do that then what is the point…

It’s hard to link play when your only prospect of getting the ball in any sort of advanced position is because Michael Keane has smelted it at you. He’s better than he’s shown but not many strikers are going to look good in that team from last season. Midfielders who couldn’t pick a forward pass, fullbacks who can’t cross, and centre backs punting aimless balls into channels. It’s not productive for any striker really. We didn’t really get any cohesion in the attacking play until Dyche arrived.

Guess the match.
