2022/23 Neal Maupay

I do have a criticism of the manager that when calvert lewin came back maupay was plonked straight on the bench. He played off wellbeck at brighton. Dont know why he wasnt tried playing off calvert lewin.
Though i appreciate it isnt that straight forward. Brightons midfield was far superior to Evertons. Its all linked.

…because we can only play X1 and Lampard plays with 3 in CM. If Maupay played, then I assume Iwobi would have to drop out.

The lad is a BHA former squad player, he averages 1 goal in 4. If you shop in Farm Foods you don't get fillet steak, in fact you don't get steak. You will pick up tinned mince. This is what we have become. A poker player throwing last hands more in hope than expectation. We got rid of squad dearth, but we rinse and repeat. We don't do young and hungry. We do fat and fail.

Maupay didnt play that way at brighton. He wasnt an orthodox number 2 striker. He played wider in a midfield role but slotted in.
I dont think mcneill or gordon are pulling up trees to get picked over him.
Agree he could be tried behind Dom in a 4411 let's face it it's not going to make us worse at this stage. It could help as we are so so blunt right now. Also possibly off a wing cutting in as you say if we are wedded to 433. I liken Maupay to Naismith, although Nais was a bit better in the air, they both play off a target man, rattling around and have a decent finish. Lamps has been very like for like on his changes. Arguably you could also try Iwobi on a wing and Garner central. You have to change things up when you aren't winning or aren't even scoring.

I had high hopes for him after seeing his debut against the rs. He done everything I thought we were getting

Workrate, being a nuisance to the opposition, good at pressing, missing a sitter......then obviously scoring a great goal next game your thinking he'll settle now for sure.

Instead he's looked absolutely dreadful with balls bouncing back off his shin, no link up, less chasing, less pressing, less of everything and what little he has done has been of such poor quality

Unless he suddenly starts slotting for fun from Boxing day onwards, not only do we need 1 striker (which was needed in the summer) we are going to need another striker to replace him as his contribution has been so poor.

I think it's a mixture of him not performing not suiting our playing style and his position not being right. Any number nine at Everton struggles with little service so they need to be very good in the air and in hold up or have blistering pace. I think Maupay is a decent player but he doesn't have a outstanding attribute as I said his skills would be used better behind a target man or on a wing. But we have nobody else fit to play as a nine now, unless Cannon is getting a run.

I think Cannon might get shipped out on loan as I think he'll move further down the pecking order once January comes. Unless he gets minutes against Wolves, City and Broghton and makes an impact.

….Adrian Heath was high quality in the basics of forward play. His technique meant the ball stuck when played into him, he could link play, he could go past defenders he could score goals, he could run a channel and gain possession, he could worry and occupy defenders.

Maupay isn’t a lone striker. To that end, his was a ridiculous signing but he‘s a forward and as such he should still have something to offer. He offers nothing, not even the basics.
I do agree with all of that. My point really was that he is not a target man. He will never be a lone striker but we are using him in that capacity. I guess I have repeatedly seen players performing badly for us while not in their preferred role. Iwobi is a case in point.

…and my point is forwards have a skill set that allows them to at least hold the ball up, run a channel, link play, occupy defenders & even aerially challenge talker defenders. Maupay seems void of basic attacker skill set.

But he had some of it at Brighton. Something happens when players come here. I think the fan expectation and pressure is much greater. I don’t know, but players recede here.

…I really don’t get blaming fans when he is lacking basics. The fans enjoy a new signing & want them to succeed, the criticism starts when they fail to deliver & add no value.
