New DOF

….my concern with Ferguson getting the job until the end of the season is we will see a bounce but then fall back in the mire.

i haven’t seen the managers he’s served particularly seeking his counsel. From the training clips, he only seems to take the goalscoring sessions at the end which are full of joviality. Indeed, the latest clips now show him taking sessions when he perhaps should be standing back & let the coaches do that.

Being Braveheart will get found out. Ferguson is too well known to the players & I wouldn’t be sure there’s a lot of respect from a footballing perspective.
It'd end in disaster, the fact he's never had the balls to try stand on his own two feet without the safety net he has here speaks volumes.

I doubt someone like Ashworth would come, because he’s competent and would demand to be in full control which Moshiri/Bill either wouldn’t agree to or wouldn’t stick to. Would be a great appointment though.

I'm not convinced we need a DOF if we have a competent experienced manager in the role

However, if Dunc, Rooney or Lampard are the front runners for the managers gig then I think having a DOF to help them is a wise idea for the time being

Brighton are a well run club, so getting Ashworth in would seem to be a good appointment. As others have said though, it's not just giving him the job he has to also be allowed to do the job

I think there's a much broader context than about which players you buy.

A manager cannot possibly have time to do all the things a DOF should do - At Brighton Dan Ashworth oversees recruitment, the academy, player loans, the womens team and medical.

In its purest form, the DOF role is supposed to ensure that the recruitment, loans and academy are structured so that there is continuity right throughout the club with regard to style, systems and giving players the best chance to make the grade in the first team. That means having a consistent system and style from the first team to the kids, recruiting players to fit the same style and loaning players out to the right clubs where they'll play in a similar way.

A manager can't do all this because their time should be spent coaching the first team - we've made so many managerial changes and played so many different ways in the last 6 years that a long term plan is impossible throughout the structure of the club.

A DOF or equivalent is pretty much essential to oversee a proper strategy.

….yep, i can understand those of a certain age holding him in hero status but he wouldn’t be anywhere near the top strikers I’ve seen at Everton.

Scary thing is mate imagine if we got in a DoF or manager who kicked out all the old boy network of Ferguson, Unsworth etc from the club, there would be a large proportion of the fan base who'd immediately be hostile towards them from that point onwards.

And that's a huge part of the problem.

He was a sicknote who when he wasnt on the treatment table as likely as not was serving a suspension for putting himself before the team and getting a stupid red card.

Kendall mark 1 would have had him out the club after a season

I think a DoF is needed if we insist on burning through managers, they have to have full control though or it is a pointless role.

His credentials are impressive. If you were him though and regardless of the cash offered, why would you move given the well known issues here.

The only realistic hope we have of getting the right DoF is by when we hire the next manager then the DoF we approach afterwards (because we won't do it the correct way round) just happens to rate the manager and agrees with the choice.

From that perspective Lampard is maybe the best manager choice wierdly as he's actually intelligent and also young and not "entrenched" in his ways

For some of us he and Cahill are all we've had really. Neither would be considered anywhere near all-time greats obviously.

Doesn't matter as long as Moshiri and The Manager are allowed to make signings too

Makes no odds, as long as Moshiri continues to meddle, no one will be able to do the job properly, if at all.
I would take him in a heartbeat but then Moshiri could easily ruin him….

Why would he come here? He surely must have noticed how Everton is being run by Moshiri. A DOF only works when he is in complete control of the footballing side, without interference from an owner.

Moshiri would have to promise no to meddle in the transfer business, which he probably cant do so I dont think he will come here

Brands undoubtedly made mistakes, but he also was destined to fail, being undermined by Moshiri and the club's managers.

Me personally am starting to warm more and more to the idea of Rooney as manager. But in order for him, or any manager to be a success here, Moshiri has to change. And I honestly think that's our biggest problem.

There's no point in hiring a new DOF unless there is no interference from owner or agents

Makes sense, but, only if he is allowed to do his job without interference. If he does turn up here as DOF, his first job should be to get Potter to come with him.

We had a DoF. Moshiri continually undermined him, then binned him off in favour of giving control to the manager and then binned the manager.

Any DoF who elects to be part of this utter mess of a setup clearly lacks the kind of judgement needed to be a good DoF.

Doesn't matter who unless Moshiri stops stepping in

Exactly, we aren't getting a good or smart DoF while Moshiri is sticking his oar in.

If the owner and manager can do their own thing without the DOF greenlighting it, having one is worthless imo.

Agree with that eggs.

Pointless having any DoF if Moshiri middles

Because we've never done the DoF remotely correctly.

I doubt someone like Ashworth would come, because he’s competent and would demand to be in full control which Moshiri/Bill either wouldn’t agree to or wouldn’t stick to. Would be a great appointment though.
There’s a theme developing here, until the owner stops “interfering on the football side of the club we are going nowhere fast! We all can’t agree on who the next manager should be, but it’s as clear as day that most of us think when it comes to the football and recruitment of players at the club Moshiri is a big if not the biggest part of the problem!
Appoint the right people to do the jobs and let them get on with it!
