Don't understand the hate for Benitez being ex Liverpool. Yes the 'small club' thing but he was playing to the gallery, Moyes did it with the People's Club thing, every manager does it.

I do understand the thinking he's finished after deciding to go to China, as that's money over ambition clearly, so an objection to him based on that is fine.

But if I had a straight choice between Rafael and Nuno, it's Rafael all day long.

People were willing to overlook any misgivings with Ancelotti because he was Ancelotti, it would be the complete opposite with Benitez. Every single thing would be pounced on from day one. Like Koeman's Christmas tree problem x 100000.

Personally, I'd get over his history but I question his hunger and motivation. We need energetic, engaged management, not someone touting themselves because the job is convenient and well-paid.

He would be the epitome of an interim manager for me, because the sack would forever hover over him and even without that, I think he would have a ceiling which wouldn't go much beyond mere stability.

I'm working to the belief that Galtier has turned us down.

Ancelotti was very much right place, right time for us. While we won't admit it, it has worked out well for all parties. I'm not sure we get that calibre of manager unless the stars align though. That's increasingly what you realise, that actaully it wasn't the promise of Usmanov's billions that got him here at all.
Yeah I don’t think Galtier will come. Agree on Ancelotti it was right place right time. No clue who’s coming now though!

Why this fascination with Rafael? I just don't get it....

Putting aside his obvious ties to that other team, he hasn't managed at the top level for a while now.. why is he being considered?

When was Nuno managing at a top level? When was Potter or Howe managing at a top level?

Fact is Rafael was managing Newcastle 2 years ago which is near enough the same level as us. 3 years before that, he was managing Madrid.

Well he plays 2 strikers and 2 attack minded wide players, though I have seen much of the team, so will take your word for it. But on paper it looks a positive formation

Conceedes few goals and doesn't score many but playing attacking football in France is chalk and cheese to playing it in the PL with about 10-11 very good teams who can all hurt you on the counter.

PSG and maybe Lyon aside not much else in that league really is there.

Main issue I have with Rafael, aside from the obvious, is that he didn’t really do that great a job with Newcastle when you look at Steve Bruce.

Someone of that Ilk, wasnt that Carlo ? Who turned about to be a terrible fit?
We will never know how Carlo would have turned out though will we. Early on last season there were times when we looked formidable and then we fell off the cliff after boxing day and were awful. He still had lots of previous idiots in his team though and had only brought in a couple himself and so after a couple more transfer windows we may have been completely different. Sadly we will never know because us being the unluckiest club on the planet had the misfortune of the most prestigious club on the planet head hunting him and there is no way was he going to miss out on that opportunity at his stage in life.

Onwards we go and still aim for proven winners imo.

I think its easier for managers like Howe and Potter to do well in the lesser divisions shall we say as a lot of clubs play dour prehistoric football so if you are a good coach that can get your team playing attacking football you are half way there imo.

The problem I think is when they reach the PL they then still play that way with lesser players against teams like Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs etc who are just simply stronger and they dont have a Plan B nor the finances/pull to bring in CL quality players who can still play that attacking football but to a higher level if that makes any sense.

For me teams like us only get better by being disciplined and tough to beat and going from there if you can finish in Europe and bring in better players you can slowly evolve your team - Leicester went from a contain and counter with Vardy/Mahrez to a now more possession based team with Maddison, Tielemans, Barnes etc.

I think going straight to a Potter with players like Sigurdsson, Slomes, Iwobi etc is asking for trouble whereas if someone like Nuno or even Galtier who doesn't play swashbuckling football btw can make us compact but do what Carlo couldn't and have us transitioning from defence to attack i.e counter attack much better / quicker I think thats our best chance of "relative success" of say 6th-7th as I don't think we are good enough for anything higher or to win a trophy at present.

Agreed generally but I would say that these managers come through 4 divisions with a system that works, once they make it to the top division they will still have a bunch of players who have had 3-4 years worth of playing that system and they wont have the money to fully change that so they go into a holding pattern for a couple of years.

With a clean slate to build from and with some players already at his disposal to play a more "Premier League way" who is to say that they couldn't do well in that situation?

It does seem that the better a manager does with his team the worse it gets for him, Wilder being sacked for example, he did a fantastic job at Sheffield United and is now seen as a bit of a joke just because he couldn't keep it going with his mix of League One and random journeymen squad. It's almost like the best thing they can do for their career is not to finish the job they started and jump off whilst they are in a lower division.

Would think Thursday would be a deadline for NES, they won't want it conflicting with the Eng/Scot game, and very unlikely an announcement gets made over the weekend.

If it was Benitez on the other hand.........they'd announce that at kick-off on Friday.

Don't worry it would still be kicking off at the final whistle!

I know people don't like odds being quoted but they are an indicator. Nuno is now 1/2 from 1/20 with SkyBet and Benitez has shortened to 3/1 second favourite, meaning it's not as done a deal as it looked.
I assume the odds have moved on account of media reports and punters having a bet on Rafael as a result.

They aren't an indicator at all of who's getting the job. They are only an indicator of where money is being placed.

If all the previous favourites for our job had got the job, then we'd have had Stubbs, Moyes for a second time, Lennon, and Martin O'Neill about 5 times.
