Objectively he’s an experienced manager with a good cv, albeit one who has not done an awful lot of note in recent years. If he didn’t have the RS links most wouldn’t bat an eyelid. Certainly my Spurs supporting mates have told me they would take him no problem.

I understand football fandom is about passion first and foremost, but there has to be an understanding that it's also a business and results are based on competence.

If it were purely on passion, whoever was the most passionate Everton fan would be the best candidate for the manager job. Obviously it doesn't work that way.

As you say, objectively Benitez has plenty of upsides. People saying he doesn't are being disingenuous.

There's literally only one objective reason he shouldn't get the job - he went to manage in China. There's nothing else.

Having a wife who hates football and a 5 year old son has moderated my football intake hugely. I just really watch Everton games now and that’s it. Which also means I’m absolutely clueless about managers and whatnot lol
A bit like the Everton board then?

I think a lot of what driver the anger is twitter. I mean I used to think forums were bad, but twitter and other social media sites are just another layer of hell in terms of fewm and anger. It ends up just winding people up more, and you probably can't have the sort of nuanced debates that are required over 280 characters. It's just people shouting catch phrases at each other.

I'd say part of it is an age thing too, you just become more balanced with age. Like you've probably seen this all before not just with Allardyce, but with Kendall MK3. It happens sometimes.

I know people hate things like the Echo and Sky Sports news/Football Focus or whatever, and a lot of the pundits aren't well versed enough but it does at least give a bit of a balanced perspective.

I try not to get too hot under the collar, and look at the fundamentals of each manager. Outside of Mark Hughes, I think all of them have some strengths, and a lot of weaknesses, so you try to balance that out as best you can. Benitez included.

Kendall mk 3??? As a kid, I can remember hearing Carey got the boot for only finishing 4th.

I agree with what you say.

If you've maybe seen your daughter get married and have kids; listened in when your partner got a difficult diagnosis; been to a mate's funeral ... whatever life throws at you, you maybe don't hit the heights of outrage that some other people do.

AFAIC, Benitez / Favre / Shirley Temple ... while we still have the same players, we're screwed no matter the manager.

It says something about this whole process that Shirley Temple isn't the worst shout I've heard.

There's nothing else... apart from the majority of the fan base hating him. Which is a massive issue.

An exercise in analysing the strengths and weaknesses of any proposed recruit is always essential.

In Benitez's case the only plus points are that he lives local , wants the job and used to be a decent manager with good CV.

However the weaknesses so obviously overwhelm the strengths that he really should not even be in the equation.

Appointing him would be the quickest way of alienating 75-80% of the fans and that is not a tenable position.

apparently the fact he lives locally is an issue too.

I care. What now?

If we do beat them then it will be "Oh you need a red to beat us lah..." etc. It would be incredibly tedious. There are other managers in the world who can also "do well".

As for the banners. One person doing one thing "says it all about our fanbase and the lack of intelligence?"

So another one of "us" defending "Rafael" and slating our fans.

Why does this keep happening? No wonder we are in a mess.

We beat them last season and didn’t need a red to do it…. Rafael’s not my ideal choice, but at the same time I don’t want to see banners with personal abuse directed towards someone attached to the gates of ground.

We are also in a mess because too many of our fans appear to have an inferiority complex when it comes to LFC.
