I'm in my late 50's and have clocked up well over 50 years of supporting our beloved team from Catterick to Carlo, but I just can’t get my head to accept the FSW under any circumstances. We are by all accounts, offering mega-wages to whoever gets the post, which in theory should attract candidates from all over the world, but he is apparently the best option to rebuild our squad and take us forward…

I make no bones about the fact that I’m a bitter blue and proud of it, therefore I will never accept a former RS employee as our manager; My bitterness goes back over 40 years to when that utter g0bshoite Emlyn Hughes sang his pathetic song and McDermott p1ssed on a nurse at St Georges Hall after they won the EC in '77. Ever since then I've hated them with a passion, which has only intensified after Heysel and all the victim mentality that has grown-up over the last 30 odd years and I’ll never change.

I feel totally fed-up that we possibly face another 18 month/2 year period with limited progress and in all honesty I felt less apathy when BFS took over.

Support the team, not the manager is the best I can do, but at the moment, I just can't face going to Goodison and seeing him in our ‘small club’ dugout.

All those issues are inter-related. The governance of the club IS a major area of concern and we've reached a tipping point with this appointment.

Il;ve said already the vast majority will initially and grudgingly accept it, but it will still have the potential to explode when Benitez fails and the board dont react but double down...which they will likely do when the first crisis of his tenure occurs.

To believe the fan/owner relationship isn't anything other than over at this point is for the birds.
Of course there's a degree of inter relation, how could it be otherwise? My point is that the problems are structural, who is appointed as manager is immaterial now, we need to understand how the club is run in order to have any chance of identifying with the club, at the moment the picture is opaque.

I know you're MO and I'm not trying to get into a 'tit for tat', but your continued cry of 'when' we fail and warnings of 'explosions' and 'ruptures' indicates your lack of objective analysis. I have no doubt we will fail at some point, all teams do, the issue is what failure looks like and the causes behind it, something I no longer have a grasp on at EFC.

Merci - I can never remember if its that or chacun le sien .......think it pretty much amounts to the same thing.
Years since I spoke French properly.
Well done mate. Iirc it is à chacun le sien or la sienne etc according to what is being discussed.
And the lesser known version:
à chaque con son goût !!!! :):)

I don't agree Dave.
The crowds will return to Goodison when they are allowed.
There won't be protests on any significant level.
Supporters will generally be unhappy about his appointment but will go to the game and support the team..... for an initial period at least .

I may be wrong but reading the posts many of those most strongly opposed seem to be American supporters or else maybe the American expressions are taking over GOT in a kind of americanism pandemic.

Benitez, unlike other new managers, will not have a period of grace from supporters and if initial results are poor then it will get nastier for him far quicker than for any other new manager but if he does make some good signings and gets some decent early results then it will be interesting to see the reaction to him here in a few weeks.

Maybe I am wrong.... time will tell.... if he is appointed, which I think is likely.
not sure you can say that it is mainly American Toffees! Quite a sweeping statement.

apart from that yes, crowds will return which will purely be down to end of this period of banned gatherings and strong desire for normality, not in anyway due to FSW and i cant wait to see it full again.

you are right, if appointed his grace period will be very short. I still think Derby in November will be the most toxic ever.

have we ever been in a situation where people want a manager gone before even appointed, Allardyce maybe but nowhere near this level

he will never be accepted by many, me included.

3rd place finish and a Europa League. Semi Finals of both the league and FA Cup too.

As I've said before Rafael was actually the choice to manage the club the summer before, but because DiMatteo won the champions league, they stuck with him, waiting for a blip in form to get rid. Roman actually wanted to give Rafael a further 2 year contract and remains on very good terms with him.

As for the fans, they all respect Rafael a lot more now and they actually wanted him to take over when Lampard was sacked.

No Chelsea fans wanted Benitez when he took over.

His points per game in the league was actually lower under Benitez than the sacked Di Matteo is memory serves me correctly?

Just a guess but I think we interviewed Nuno, weren’t convinced so kept looking.. interviewed Rafael at which point we decided to go for Nuno after all - but he’s been delaying as he wants the Spurs job.

Would explain the hold up.

hear hear

And that is when the crisis will occur.

You do wonder, what Usmanov has said to Benitez, and what Benitez has said to Usmanov. We know Ancelotti was making clear he wanted to compete for honours. I'd guess that of the names suggested only Benitez has said the same.
