And he's not allowed to do the job he was hired for because the owner refuses to let him. Do you not get the analogy about the construction company? I'll spell it out. Moshiri is me buying something I know nothing about. The construction company is football in general but Everton for this point. The person who is meant to know what they are doing is Brands. But if the owner keeps on making bad choices and overriding everything it's their fault.

Thats complete conjecture on Everton social media.

We haven't a clue what Brands does or doesn't do as he doesn't speak to the fans to tell us.

The more I think about the appointment the more Chelsea esque it seems. If we aren't around European places he will be gone within a season.. It's all short term thinking

This is a more pressing concerns, we need improvements on the playing side otherwise any manager is going to struggle.
Yeah but part of my concern is that the appointment of Benitez is alarm bells territory that we are going to see very little investment in the squad for the next few years as the ground is being built. Now this may be because they want to stop putting money in or because of PL funding rules etc., or both. But it seems to me the kind of appointment you make if your aim is to just stay in the PL and occasionally creep into the top half if you are lucky.

For me, the way to solve this problem is to get a manager in with a reputation for developing young players, who the club can then sell on one or two at a time to swell the transfer pot (a la Leicester, Lille etc). But instead we've gone down the Burnley route of just staying in the division by hook or by crook.

I really hope I'm wrong, but I've been wracking my brains trying to think why they would be so determined to appoint Benitez against the wishes of almost the entire fambase and this is what I keep coming back to.

Given the mental fragility and physical limitations of our squad, giving the job to a young coach could result in a relegation battle if they try and get our current team to try and press. Look what happened against Man City when we tried, ridiculously in my opinion, to try and play open expansive football.
Maybe but that's an argument for a long term rebuild and identity shift. Benitez will be expected to be around the European places if he isn't he won't last long.

There’s a lot of money tied up in it with investors. They’re not going to invest if we are relegated. Get the stadium built and the squad improved to a point where we can give the train set to a riskier appointment with a potential bigger reward.

A bit like the squad we gave to Martinez, it was good enough that there wasn’t that much danger of it going badly wrong. This squad isn’t anywhere near that, a wrong turn and we’d be in a relegation scrap no question in my mind.
I just fear that we are doomed to be also rans forever and that the stadium is not going to end up solving that problem but will actually exacerbate it. I didn't mind too much not winning things when we were a community club because there were other reasons to support the club but they feel like they are being stripped away too. If we're not going to win anything anyway why are we selling our soul? I might be wrong about all of this, of course, maybe we'll be extremely successful or maybe the club will start considering the fans or the heritage of the club in their decisions in the future. It just doesn't seem like either scenario is anywhere close to the horizon.

I don't think Benitez would sign up without assurances of money to spend

Brought them a couple of European cups, a couple of UEFA cups and a shed load of domestic trophies hasn't it... Leicester are another club who follow that path as well that are having the most successful period of their existence. Could well be better than having a philosophy and making every decision guided by that.

if they were planning to appoint a manager and then not give him any money in the hope he wouldn't notice, they could not have made a worse appointment

It's an argument for a long term change in direction in terms of the signings made by the director of football. It's also an argument for appointing an experienced manager to keep things ticking over whilst this evolution takes place.
