Think it's likely that both of you are just talking about the moment you realised Everton had hit a glass ceiling. It wasn't because of Moyes that that happened, but he was in charge when it did, and so in people's heads it becomes his fault. He stayed here a long time, it got a bit samey, people got bored and convinced themselves everything would change if he left because it was him holding us back. It takes about 10 seconds of looking at our record before and after him to make you realise this wasn't the case.

That being said, the same thing would apply if he came back. He's had his time here, it went well without actually being successful, and there's just no need at all for him to be given another go. I very much doubt he's even in the reckoning to be honest, and a mixture of lazy journalism and his team trying to make it sound like he's in demand and needs a better contract are all that's keeping his name in the frame.
Sorry but i don't believe in any glass ceilings and i hate to keep mentioning them but Leicester shows exactly what can be done with the proper people in charge. I remember comments like knife to a gunfight that was a comment effectively putting a glass ceiling of his own on expectations so we were always thought of as the best of the rest and that mentality seeped its way into the team.

There has been talk in the media that Moshiri made it clear to Ancelotti that he wasn’t pleased with results and performances in the run in and that Ancelotti felt he might get shown the door.
It was a terrible season, I’m only half disappointed and I assume we get compensation?

On Day 3 of churning things over in my mind, today I'm with Lampard, Martinez, Potter, and Kovac as those I wouldnt mind in the job.

I would be hugely disappointed with Moyes / NES. I'm hoping those links are just deliberate misleading briefing from the club to journos, I think they are exaggerated.

Although we don't have much time, it's better to take 2 weeks or so. I think we'll have someone in place by mid-month.
Was crap when he was with this club.

I hope we don’t to be honest. Unless we have the finances to back them we’ll be peeing in the wind again. Pretty much made Ancelotti the highest paid manager in the league and then gave him the same amount of funds we gave Sam Allardyce.

We aren’t ready for managers like that unfortunately, we just don’t have the resources. I think it’s another big lesson learnt for Moshiri.
Even Man City had to appoint Mark Hughes before they were at a level to appoint a proven winner who was able to bring them success. We jumped the gun appointing a manager like Ancelotti without having the right personnel for him to work with.

dont want any of those except Kovac tbh. Lampard was out of his depth at Chelsea and our job is much much harder than the chelsea job. Martinez is a nostalgia retread, and Potter hasnt exactly done wonders with Brighton.

Most fans will be against whoever we appoint if it isn't a top manager mate.

Going from the name of Carlo Ancelotti to a mid tier manager is like going from steak to a processed ready meal.

The only "big" name manager I'd want here who is possibly free soon is Pochettino.

Benitez, Nuno, Howe etc. can get firmly in the bin.

Rangnick I'd have in if he can replace Brands at the same time.

ten Hag, Gallardo, Amorim, Galtier etc. I'd prefer to the binned few since they're a bit more out of the box.

This is the thing for me, the club / Moshiri set out his intentions with Ancelotti.

Dropping down, and it is dropping down, to the likes of Nuno or Howe or Potter is just bleuhh. The sentimental Moyes choice is the worst option for me.

It has to be either top or 'outside the box'.

NES built his Wolves side, got them promoted, brought them stability, took them into Europe and made them competitive in the league.

Lampard failed to get Derby promoted and then inherited a top group of players at Chelsea and fell flat on his face.

Lampard shouts are poor IMO and the record of NES shouldn’t be frowned upon, he’s done a very good job at Wolves.

This is an important point with some of the revisionism. I mean I am very pro Moyes, I think he did an excellent job here, but know I am in a minority in my outlook. The moment he walked back in people would be counting the years since he's won a trophy and starting at 11. It would be a lot of pressure. He would have all the baggage of the derby record too etc with very little of the patience the supporters showed.

I also don't think he has ever shown he can effectively manage a group a of players beyond the sort of 50-65 points bracket. He's very good at getting people there, but not sure he gets people beyond that. We have 59 points currently in the bag. The concern is he hits a glass ceiling exactly where we currently sit, and he doesn't have the credit in the bank of his st time where he took us from 17th or whatever to get there.

I reiterate though I like Moyes and I think he plays much better football than people give him credit for. West Ham this season have been brilliant with 3 or 4 attacking tricky players in the team at once. If we were going that route I'd prefer Rangnick myself.
I agree with most of this, really. I've always rated Moyes, and think his main weakness is in not recognising a poison chalice of a job when he sees it. I'd happily have him here again if he'd dye his hair, cultivate a moustache, and call himself Moyesoni. As things stand, such is the level of (misplaced, in my opinion) hostility toward him, that the first dullish draw would generate such a level of fan protest as to make the appointment completely untenable. Ancelotti, on the other hand, could serve up all sorts of dross with a much more expensively assembled team, and still be cuddly Carlo, and prompt widespread 'In Carlo we trust' remarks.

Given all that, some younger guy with a promising record might at least be given a chance, so that does seem to be the most practical way to go.

Mourinho was contacted first according to one media outlet, which is odd as he wasn’t really liked there by the fans.
They are looking quite desperate for such a big club.
In masses of debt and potentially getting booted out of the CL. Times are tough.
