a question was asked some time ago ('09 after a boxing day visit to Sunderland)...
Attendance: 46,990
Big crowd, all paying fans at the game buying lager and pies as well.
Can someone, anyone, this is a quest not exclusive to the anti-Kirkby/KEIOC mafioso's find out when Goodison last held a match with an attendance over the figure quoted above please.
this is what I dug out ...
the last time our average home attendance was over 40,000 was in 1974-75
in 84-85 it was 32,131
in 86-87 it was 32,977
last game i can find that is over 45,000 is....
WedMay3 1989
Div 1 the shoite45,994
which would have been just after hillsborough
the last time we topped sunderlands figure was
SunFeb21 1988
FAC 5H the shoite againL0-1
48,270
for a non-shoite game it is the day we won the league
MonMay6 1985
Div 1H Q.P.R. W2-050,514
also that season.....
12 days before.....
WedApr24 1985
ECWC SF:2 H Bayern Munich W3-149,476
for what you'd class as a 'normal' game......
SatFeb16 1985
FAC 5 H Telford W3-0 47,402
It would be both embarrassing and damaging to our brand if we were to build a brand-new stadium that's even smaller than Anfield. It would just confirm our status as the city's inferior club. No one's saying we should try to put Old Trafford in the shade, but if it's going to be smaller than stadia like Anfield and St James' Park, then we might as well not bother.
I know that some are concerned that we would be unable to fill a stadium with a capacity of 60,000 or more (not that having a couple of thousand empty seats would be detrimental to us in any way), but our highest ever attendance is close to 80,000. And a move to a new stadium almost always increases a club's attendances massively. When Arsenal played at Highbury they almost never had capacity attendances and Highbury only held 39,000 people. Conversely, the Emirates, a stadium with a capacity of 60,000, is almost always full. And West Ham's average attendance has shot up by over 20,000 since their move to the Olympic Stadium. Fans are much more likely to want to watch their team in a state-of-the-art stadium than in a decrepit stadium that is riddled with obstructed views, like Goodison.
