New Everton Stadium

He's pointing out how Arsenal were set back as a result of their new stadium construction. In Arsenal's case (who are up there with Man Utd and Barcelona tbh) they went from ruling the PL to not winning a trophy for eight years, which to Arsenal fans is seen as being a poor performance and unbefitting of their club.

But comparing Arsenal's new stadium development to Everton's current circumstances is a bit ridiculous because they are/were on another planet to us. How much did they get for selling Highbury? How much will we get for selling Goodison? When you do compare their situations it just becomes obvious that Arsenal and Everton's situations are considerably different.

I don't even want to see Kenwright's latest pretend effort to build a crap new stadium. With all these relatively small clubs like Stoke, West Ham, Swansea giving it the big one with their massive new TV revenues which can attract top notch foreign talent, the last thing we need to be doing is neglecting squad recruitment in favour of some knobhead project. It will be the next regime that sorts the stadium project out, not Bill Kenwright and Co.
They had one good team with the likes of Henry and Viera etc

The reason they fell away was because they either retired or simply got older. Now if they you could argue that the newer players like Nasri would have stayed had they shown the ambition but without a stadium to pay for their salaries and more new signings that was impossible either way.

The same way whether we build a stadium or not if Rom progresses he will be gone. We either a) won't be able to build the stadium in time or b) won't be able to fund the team playing at the level of Champions League football and challenging for the title even with Champions League money.

If we get Champions League and are guaranteed at least into the group stage and the money. Can we then go out and pay for the players to stay there? Short term yes but what if we miss out the next year?

To have any chance of staying there once we get there we need to build the stadium. Stop looking at the short term, it's the reason we're in this mess. To see an example of this just look at Spurs.

We won't get a new regime without a new stadium.

We do need a new stadium. But if you have to pay for it out of revenue, then the construction is going to be at the expense of the team. I'm saying that fans can expect a dip in performance.

Arsenal have emerged from this difficult patch, and can now invest more in the team. Throughout this time, Arsenal have qualified for the Champions League and have come through their group too. But the fans have not been satisfied, and have called for Wenger to be sacked.

Everton would suffer a similar dip. The danger is not that Everton would not win anything, but that they would flirt with relegation. Everton fans are not happy now and would find it hard to bear. The manager would certainly face criticism and it would be a very difficult few years.
If we do it now we have a good enough team that is also young so that won't happen. Players might leave and we might drop a bit but they will fund their replacements or give us the opportunity to bring through young talent. We're a long way away from having a team that would be fighting relegation.

From the moves Martinez has made in the market it would appear this is his strategy.

I agree however on one thing. It will require the support of the fans and that requires cast iron guarantees that the stadium is actually going to be built, the fans will be happy with it and ultimately it will be worth it.

Unfortunately this board treat the fans like adversaries.

It's not the stadium per se that is holding Everton back, a new stadium will not revolutionise Everton's financing and ability to deal at the top table.

It's Everton's balance sheet that is the issue. The Club does not have sufficient working capital to spend the sums required in playing staff. We will continue to shop at Lidl whilst our competitors shop at Fortnum and Mason.

Looking at Everton as a business, we are dreadfully under-capitalised, that's the biggest issue.

So, how can that be changed? Our board knows all this...I quess theyre just waiting the right rich owner candidate to emerge...

Unfortunately I sort of agree. 10 years ago it would have but now we almost need to build the stadium just to stay still.

Everton is a business and no matter who comes in it will be run as a business which means we need to maximize our revenue and a stadium will go some way towards that. There's a chance with a shiny new stadium some billionaire might buy us but honestly it's probably unlikely.

Either through a sale and the new owner re-capitalising the club, or through an issue of new shares, diluting the current majority owners. The latter will never happen of ocurse.

I suspect most billionaires would prefer to build their own stadium rather than buy someone else's creation.

FFP allows stadium development to come from investment but not playing staff.

Perhaps if we set aside the funds to build a stadium and then took on a rich sugar daddy's money to invest in the team we might be able to do both at the same time or at least close to the same time. I'm sure some fancy accountant could work it out. But for a rich sugar daddy to be interested again it comes back to the stadium.

See above. They probably would but if we already had the funding and planning in place then that significantly lowers the risk for them. Then all they have to do is invest in the team.

He's massively out of his depth

I think it's unfair to say Elstone is massively out of his depth, if you have a quick look at his equivalent job holders;

Arsenal - Ivan Gazidis
Oxford Graduate, founding member of, and deputy commissioner of MLS

Aston Villa - Tom Fox
5 years chief commercial officer at Arsenal, head of sports marketing at Nike.

Man City. - Ferran Soriano
5 years as General Manager of FC Barcelona

Robert Elstone - Everton
University of Hull. Resigned from Castleford Tigers.

He more than holds his own.

That is depressing.
