Sorry but what has the welfare state got to do with how people earn a living ?
Even with the welfare state people still work in construction , and it is still one of the most hazardous industries to work in.
The men in that film were skilled workers not indentured , browbeaten serfs

I'm not doubting for one minute that they were extremely skilled workers. I was commenting on the conditions they were working under.
Obviously people still work in construction and it is and always will be hazardous, but thank God for health and safety legislation.
