Me and the wife are looking at going to New York mid January next year for 4 nights, staying at a hotel called The Hotel Times Square (if anyone has stayed there)

I'm just looking for info on what would be the top five 'must do' excursions and what amount of $ would be needed for 4 nights, all activities will be pre booked and paid for.

Never been before, but really want to do the main attractions and sample the city itself.

Any info welcome.

Was meant to go with me arl fella round about now; but the insurance for me arl fella (79 partially sighted & with pins holding his head on his shoulders) was extortionate.

Hope you have a blast, whatever you do ;)

I'm off to NYC for my second visit in October, can't wait! I'm sure you'll get plenty of better suggestions from others here but the obvious things to do would be go to the top of the Empire State, get the Staten Island Ferry etc. We also went to 'The High Line' which is an old railroad transformed into a great stretch of park, I would really recommend!

Do the boat trip around Manhatten Island. Statue of Liberty is a must see. Go to the top of the Empire State Building. I paid a visit to the Dakota Buildings to pay my respects to John Lennon but that isn't compulsory! Central Park is lovely Can't help with prices, I went in late 1990s. You will love it. Have fun!

Empire state, The high line, get the subway to Coney island then on the way back get off in Brooklyn and walk back over the bridge to Manhattan, the Rockerfeller centre should have the ice-rink open, walk round Central park, in fact walk as much as you can and take a warm coat I went in february a few years ago and it snowed.Get the Staten island ferry, it's free and you can stay on and come back to Manhattan.Go to the ice hockey if you can get a ticket.
There's plenty of good american ale now and you can eat in most of the bars at reasonable prices.

Take the China bus to Philly

As stated by @anjelikaferret, the Empire State Building is more than worth the effort. Plus, hiring the head-phones to listen to the narrative by Tony brings everything to 'life'.
That, and two visits to Central Park. The first is the ride in the horse pulled Surrey. The second one, if you are there for the weekend, is the family stroll around the park on each Sunday. You will be astounded by how clean it is, and also by the good manners of the walkers. And it's free.
Also free is the walk along all the famous streets, including Broadway. It's obviously not free if you happen to shop ,but you will be amazed by how much LESS things cost to buy. (Then you realise how we get battered in this country for goods).
Do read up on tipping though. Where it is expected and what the going rates are. It's good manners, and doesn't cost as much as you would expect.
Happy holiday, and I'm sure it will be, as we are planning another trip before too long.

....I took the family for my 50th and somebody recommended an evening meal and cruise on the Hudson and East rivers, out to the Statue of Liberty and under Brooklyn Bridge. It was fantastic, the food and booze was great but the night views of Manhatten was unforgettable. I think it was called the Yacht Company. If you're celebrating something special it's worth it, my folk still talk about it now.
