New York

Me and the wife are looking at going to New York mid January next year for 4 nights, staying at a hotel called The Hotel Times Square (if anyone has stayed there)

I'm just looking for info on what would be the top five 'must do' excursions and what amount of $ would be needed for 4 nights, all activities will be pre booked and paid for.

Never been before, but really want to do the main attractions and sample the city itself.

Any info welcome.
I've been 3 times now. Amazing place. If you want to see all of Manhattan, take the Gray line bus tour. The tours are normally in three parts, upper, mid and lower Manhattan. But if you walk in to Times Square, their are ticket sellers everywhere all trying to get your custom, so you can haggle and get all three tours for the price of one.
You can jump on and off the bus at any place that takes your fancy and just jump on the next one that comes along. You can do Central Park and the Dakota building, go on up to Harlem, and all the way back down to the world trade centre site.
Empire State Building is a must, which you can walk to from where you are, and the Statue of Liberty (although can get very claustrophobic walking up the spiral staircase when busy).
Greenwich village is also a good place to visit. Ellis island is a must also, you can trace any family members that ever left for the new world.
And if after all that, if you still have any time, go to a baseball game. The Yankees or the mets is an amazing day/night out. Really easy to get tickets and even easier to get to. Just jump on the subway, really easy to get around and very safe.
Some amazing bars and clubs dotted about and places to eat, for every taste, everywhere.

Just one other tip. If your budget allows, try and do a week. The first time I went was for four nights and we just couldn't fit everything in. The trouble is, you'll like to so much you'll want to go back to visit everything you missed, so you'll probably save in the long run.

My missus has been wanting to go for years. Was going to take her this year for her birthday, but just went to York. I will go next year if I get enough overtime in. Hope you enjoy it mate.

ground zero is worth it, remember to book the time to enter the museum. ( saves waiting for hours in queues), don't let the queues put you off as they stagger the times of entry, it's a good system and works.
as posted already, buy a tour from the lids selling all over the city, there is one that includes a trip on the Hudson, and ferry to Ellis Ireland, good value.my fav part of the city is Central Park, and the buildings around it. look out for the Ghostbusters building.

Four nights is plenty so divide up the stuff you want to do and have a loose plan on your places for the day. Hard to give a list of five (yeah really) stuff to do as there's so much to do and it's subjective to taste. Mid January will be brutal though so make sure you wrap up as though you're going the Antarctic.

Defo do top of the Rockefeller Centre and time it for sun down so you can watch the lights across Manhattan come on, you get two sets of photos, in daylight and all lit up. Everyone heads up the Empire State Building but Top Of The Rock is better as you get a photo of the Empire State Building as you're not on top of it! Also get nice photos across Central Park.

The overhead railway garden is a pleasant enough walk if you're down Greenwich way and south Manhattan.

I like the upper west and east side of Central Park for different reasons.

Brooklyn is worth a visit because there's an Everton supporters club there if there's a game on.

Staten Island ferry is free and gets you photos of the Statue Of Liberty and south Manhattan as you cruise back to it.

Get yourself a subway ticket and top it up. It's economic and better than those tourist buses they try and sell you tickets for.

Do your research, plan and have fun. Greatest city in the world.

Cheers mate.

Forgot to say, it usually saves you time and money to prebook the stuff you want like the Top Of The Rock, and museums.
Yeah we're gonna do that, they travel agents were trying to sell us something called 'the ride' which has had incredible reviews. Also a show like the lion king, want to see Central Park, Times Square at night, Empire stat building, pay respects at 9/11 centre. So gonna be jam packed busy, but we've been wanting to do it for ages.

I'm sure you'll enjoy mate. You've already got love for Florida so it's a good warm up for New York. The theatre district opens out into Hells Kitchen if I remember, had a few decent meals there if that's your plan.

Also plan one night for food and drinks in Greenwich Village, nice place, right out of Friends.

Most important of all, don't be selfish. Take your missus to Broadway and watch a show. I got my missus tickets for phantom of the opera, I was in her good books for at least a week....

Been there 3 times, great city!....
Central park is a must....summer or winter it's great to take a stroll around....Chrysler building, Empire state, Rockefeller all class to check out (particularly at night)....for good bars/cafes/restaurants be worth checking out Greenwich village & west village (Soho and Chelsea too)....Times square obviously too is a must....check out Madison Square garden website for Basketball games and concerts (Yankee stadium is cool but won't be anything on in January)....if it's something you might enjoy, you could apply for tickets to the Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon or the Late show (both free), I went to Late show with Letterman and really enjoyed it!...
Check out Macy's for shopping, bring your passport and you can get a 10-15% discount....

It's pricey in NYC though....accommodation ain't cheap, nor is the bars around the place...

ground zero and St. Paul's church next to it are MUST do's .

Central Park is class though when I went it was made better by the New York marathon being on .

Try and do an event at MSG or if not the Barclays . January is play off time in the NFL which would be great if the Giants or jets were playing . I had a great night watching the giants .

Tbh you'll just just off being there . Go to Times Square and night and just soak in the atmosphere .

Seeing the roads full of yellow cabs all beeping there horn was boss .

Katz is a must

China town and little Italy are great as well .

Carmines In Times Square is a great experience but beware one meal can feed multiple people I'm not joking .

Have a look around grand central station .

My eldest spent a few nights there getting bladdered on the roof of my cousins Manhatten appartment.

Said it was pretty good.
