New York

Cheers mate, that'd be great. I'd want a great burger, great Italian food and other high calorie tasty grub.
Some of the best food I've ever eaten. Like the esk says, go to the diners for your breakfast, they're open all night most of them so you can start your day as early as you like. And when the waitress asks if you want maple syrup on your bacon and links, go for it. You'll need the calories and it actually tastes really nice.

You wanna see New York, jib the tourist attractions after about 2 days. Walk down Broadway right to the Greenwich and soho. You've got bleaker street, little Italy, Chinatown and no hoards of tourists. If you like vinyl records or comics get to st marks place, fantastic little street. If you must do the norm tourist stuff then Empire State, Central Park, the Dakota building (even if you're not a John Lennon fan, he was a scouser and was taken from us there) if the Giants or jets make it to the playoffs in the NFL in January try and find a proper bar and watch the match (you won't get tickets).

Also try and see Coney Island (if you've seen the Warriors it's a must)

New York is favourite place on this speck of cosmic sand and I hope you fall in love with it as much as I did.

The info received has been fantastic, you can sense the passion for the place and that's made it even more exciting.

On the assumption that all activities are pre paid before we arrive, what budget (which would cover food and travel) would people suggest 4 days we were thinking around 1600 dollars.

Cracking shout this. The cuisine of NYC is amazing. I just haven't been enough to put up a decent list.

Will be clocking your suggestions though for next time.

Happy to oblige, New York is an amazing place to find good food that doesn't break the wallet.

Key is to eat where locals eat rather than the tourist traps - but you don't need me to tell you that :)
