New Orleans, would a week be two long for it? Another city close by be worth a visit?

A week would be too much IMO. Unless you are simply going to party.

Houston's only a few hours drive, but it's largely just a giant ugly city IMO.

Memphis would be a really short flight from there.

That would be, a few of us are forty in 3 years time and we are contemplating a boy's trip to Vegas but our wife's are weary of letting us loose in sin city.

Agree with this. Been to New Orleans and ace city. Loved exploring it including outside the French Quarter, ace city to have a good time.

Recommend it highly, but no more than a week. Four nights is about right. Norlins.

Sorry mate. Lived there for several years...absolutely hated it. For me it is one of the best examples of a big, ugly American city.
