Been there 3 times, great city!....
Central park is a must....summer or winter it's great to take a stroll around....Chrysler building, Empire state, Rockefeller all class to check out (particularly at night)....for good bars/cafes/restaurants be worth checking out Greenwich village & west village (Soho and Chelsea too)....Times square obviously too is a must....check out Madison Square garden website for Basketball games and concerts (Yankee stadium is cool but won't be anything on in January)....if it's something you might enjoy, you could apply for tickets to the Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon or the Late show (both free), I went to Late show with Letterman and really enjoyed it!...
Check out Macy's for shopping, bring your passport and you can get a 10-15% discount....

It's pricey in NYC though....accommodation ain't cheap, nor is the bars around the place...
You're right, I didn't read the January bit. No baseball sorry. Can anyone remember the name of the revolving restaurant in Times Square? I just remember it's above a hotel and you take a glass elevator up to it.
Some amazing views while you're eating, but don't get out of your seat too often, as the centre bit doesn't move and you look a bit silly trying to find out where you were sat. Luckily all the staff see it all the time and guide you safely back to your table.

Going back for a 2nd visit next month (first went for England's mini tour in Chicago & New York in 2005). I'm staying a couple of blocks from the UN building, which seems decent enough location-wise.

Going to do the High Line, Ststie of Loberty and Coney Island this time. We did a heli rise, Empire State Building and Central Park last time - all excellent and I'll try again this time of time permits. I'll go for early morning jogs pre-dawn to get some atmospheric photos before the city wakes up. I'm planning on taking the Roosevelt Island Tramway thing, which a few mates have said is worth a look.

Of course, football takes centre stage: both New York City & Red Bulls are at home on consecutive nights, plus Peter Hook and the Light play the first night I'm there.

I'll deffo be eating and drinking far too many calories but honestly don't give a flying fig.

For me little things like using the subway made the trip . You realise what a soulless place London is I'm comparison .
Again, spot on. The people of NYC are ace.

It's the most hyped city in the entire world. Any "product" like that for touristic value has to manage expectations or wilt. NYC has all this hype and still tends to over deliver expectations.

That's quite some feat.

agreed . It's the only place I've been were my expectations of the place were far exceeded . Like Vegas for example . I expected big things and it wasn't 'all that '

I was told that New Yorkers weren't very friendly, nothing could be further from the truth. After a couple of days of fitting in, you think you're invisible but they have a knack of spotting a tourist a mile away and go out of their way to make you welcome.

If you want some local food joints I'll put a list together for you, just let me know your food preferences. Don't book breakfast in your hotel, eat in a local diner like Ellen's Stardust diner or Hector's cafe - great experiences and good food.
Cheers mate, that'd be great. I'd want a great burger, great Italian food and other high calorie tasty grub.
