I respect all who remain optimistic in such games but I'm too old for such defiance.

Thing is you can't "unlearn" stuff and the stuff Everton teaches you over 60yrs is to be cynical in the great hope you look a complete hole when it blows up in your face. If it doesn't then the beauty is the angst meter reaches a manageable 4/10 rather than the tortuous and blood boiling 9/10 that eventually sees you off.

Newcastle have drawn a lot of games but have only lost one and that was at Anfield in the last minute so while I think things will pick up after this one, I really can’t see a win here unless we put in a great performance.

The purpose is to analyze the match beyond the final score. You don't have to like it or participate, but pretending it's all fake is just accepting ignorance. Some people want to understand the game while others are just here for the emotion. Both are fine.

I never said it was all fake. Goals, assists, possession etc are legitimate things you can tangibly quantify post-game. My point was about when people bleat pre-game with "expected this" and "expected that". Arbitrary nonsense to me, might as well just pluck numbers out the air and debate 90 minutes later if we were better or worse than some selective algorithim says we "should have been"; but each to their own, if they're into that sort of thing.
